How to Find Your Audience on the Internet

The use of social media to connect and the internet to explore has changed how we do business. In fact, this is the fastest growing sector in our economy with social media and marketing research experts in demand. Being part of this trend is hardly an option these days; rather it is a necessary tool to keep your name out there.

Developing a brand through the use of social media and the internet is tricky. First of all, you have to deal with the millions of other people doing the same thing as they attempt to rise to the top of their social and professional groups. The competition for an audience is fierce, so knowing how to create an audience and keep them is essential to stay competitive.

Unless, you have a lot of disposable income and can pay for a professional to manage your sites, your message may get lost in the maze of the internet highway, where others are looking for the same thing as you are; an audience.

It seems that there are people out there that are masters at building their brand on the internet. Are they just more talented and interesting than you are? Hardly. They just know how to use the internet sites and social media to their advantage to create a compelling brand. There is a whole lot of theatre when it comes to social media.

Here are some tips that will help you develop a better brand on the internet:

1.)   Use photos whenever possible. People love to look at photos. And, don’t make them all about you posing rather try to be more spontaneous and “campy.” Share interesting and beautiful photos of nature, celebrities, and your favorite pet. Most sites now allow you to either post or link to a photo.

2.)   Video is becoming more popular as smart phones have made it easy to upload. Use a short video to tell a story. Make sure your picture and sound quality are good, so people can easily watch them.

3.)   Make comments whenever possible in your industry Linkedin groups. You want to be known as a thought-leader on these sites. Chose 4 sites and really work them by offering intriguing discussions and responses to others questions.

4.)   Share your life with openness and passion. Followers want to read relatable topics that they can share in.  This makes you real to the people cruising these sites.

5.)   Develop a blog following by turning your audience into a subscriber. Stay “on message” in your blog postings, so they know what to expect when they take their precious time to read what you have to say.

People are bombarded on the internet constantly with information. We all only have so much time in the day to spend on reading what others have to say on these social media sites and blogs. Use your time wisely and learn who your audience is and why they will read your postings. There is an audience for everyone, you just need to know how to attract and keep them.
