A few days ago, I received a card in the mail from my friend Laura. Laura is a lovely friend I met through the Game of Thrones parties with Brewery Ommegang. She cosplays the Weirdwood and the Three-Eyed Crow- so cute! Anyway, Laura had replaced the “V” in “Valentine’s Day” with a “G.” Galentine’s Day.... Read more »
Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is barreling toward us. I’ve always liked the holiday- and this is coming from someone who didn’t really have a boyfriend until college. When I was single, I’d throw parties for all of my loner friends. In times of commitment, I’d try to make Valentine’s Day interesting with... Read more »
My 2014 Valentine’s Day has been a bit of a bust. I have a crippling migraine, and the gift I was going to buy myself sold out. Bah! At least I have a fantastic dinner from the geek guy later on. If you’re really itching for some date ideas, you can find mine from the... Read more »
I FINALLY saw Disney’s Frozen yesterday. I took all of my day job employees. We enjoyed it far more than we expected! Internet arguments aside, Frozen made me laugh, cry, and wish my sister were in the theater. Afterward, my whole team felt better about Chicago’s below-zero temperatures. We weren’t freezing- just “Letting It Go!” Ha. Anyway,... Read more »
I take geek romance very seriously. It’s one of my favorite blogging topics, from themed gift ideas to advice for singles. Today, I’m addressing the most common question I get: “What’s the best place in Chicago for a geeky date?” …OK, busted. I totally did this last year. However, I have even MORE to share in 2013!... With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, it’s time to find the perfect gift for your very special somepony. …Yep, I said “somepony.” If your bf or gf is a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, you have a huge pool of gifts to choose from. Figurines and playsets are the most prevalent, but the... Read more »
So. You’ve made the decision with your geeky beloved to have a “low key” Valentine’s Day, because it’s “a Hallmark holiday” and “not a big deal,” right? Wrong. I say that every year… and then get jealous of some chick with a dozen roses or Godiva chocolates or a Harry Potter LEGO set or pink... Read more »
So, Capricon was nice. Their art show was particularly refreshing; I hadn’t seen a setup like that since Dragon*Con. That said, the con gave me a few more leads on geeky things to do TONIGHT! I know these are last minute, and that I already dedicated a full post to this GEEKend… but I’m a girl... Read more »
I’m interrupting my chain of Valentine’s articles to bring you a list of things to do this GEEKend! …That is, if the snow lets up. I already put a new crack in my bumper just trying to go to Target. 1. Capricon! This sci-fi, fantasy, and alt history convention is in its 32nd incarnation. Their... Read more »
I hate missed opportunities. I heard about An Intimate Evening with Nobuo Uematsu. I hesitated. It sold out. My dream of sitting with 149 other people + the composer of the Final Fantasy soundtracks is shattered. …Granted, I only discovered this dream 5 days ago, but it’s still totally important and soul-crushing. I don’t want you... Read more »
