This GEEKend: Chi Nerd Comedy Fest, Sailor Moon Day, I Fight Dragons, and more!

This week, my geek guy had some friends in town from Boston. We took them to Fountainhead and Scooter’s (great life choices.) As we parted ways, the pair asked where else in Chicago they should go. We happened to be parked next to a storefront that had MULTIPLE geeky posters displayed: Chi Nerd Comedy Fest,... Read more »

This GEEKend: Badfic Love and Dr. Horrible Sing-Along

Everything I had planned for this week got canceled. I’m not exaggerating. A job interview, a meeting, and a sales transaction all fell through, each the day-of. It has been pretty frustrating, what with the extensive planning that goes into these things. I guess it’s just that kind of week. Thankfully, we’re almost through it.... Read more »

Disney Princesses Reimagined in 5 Geeky Ways

Even though I LOVE butt-kicking heroines like Leia, Buffy, and River Tam, I have a soft spot for Disney Princesses.  I grew up with the movies.  Aladdin = dreamy!!  Thus, it hurts me that the controversy surrounding Merida from Brave had to happen.  Disney had the opportunity to change its girly, damsel-filled Princess roster into something... Geeky Wedding Dresses in Science Fiction and Fantasy

First up are two lovely dresses from Doctor Who. These are particularly special because they weren't designed by a costume department. Donna Noble (left) wore a Jasper Conran piece, and Amy Pond (right) rocked Ben de Lisi. These were, at one point, available in UK stores. Now, they'll occasionally pop up on eBay or eBay UK. Just beware; Whovians are VICIOUS when it comes to online auctions!
At the beginning of March, I had the honor of standing up in my best friend’s wedding.  Since then, I’ve had weddings on the brain (watch out, geek guys)!  I’ve been thinking about my own, possible, maybe-someday wedding, and just how geeky I’d like it to be.  Would I go subtle, or full-on “Mal and... 3 Geeky Live Shows to See in Chicago This December

Whenever the daunting task of holiday shopping gets me down, I try to think outside the box.  I’ve purchased a helicopter ride for my dad,  a cooking class for my sister, skydiving for a friend.  …It hardly ever works.  Only one of these has actually used their gift.  Perhaps it’s time to think a little... Leaky Con 2012 Recap: Harry Potter and the Windy City

Snape, Snape, Severus Snape...
Some people choose the perfect characters for themselves to cosplay.
Many would say that the Harry Potter fandom is on its way out.  The books are finished.  The movies are complete.  There’s Pottermore, but the website doesn’t really expand the lore. LeakyCon considered calling it quits after 2011.  Thankfully, the powers that be had a change of heart.  The convention landed in Chicago for 2012, from August... Read more »

Product Review: False Nostalgia Scents 'n Sundries

Yesterday was my birthday.  In an effort to silence the age-related sadness, I bought myself some gifts.  False Nostalgia is an etsy store specializing in Firefly/Serenity and other fandom-themed fragrances, lotions, soaps, etc.  Shiny!  Shannon, the shop owner, is a sweetheart who loves feedback.  Her scent list is expansive, and even has some options for...
