The best cosplay of C2E2 2015 - FRIDAY

The first group I saw was an entire Hawk family. The family that cosplays together, stays together. :)
Geeks all over the Midwest have been waiting for today. C2E2 2015, the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo, has begun! Thousands of fans are descending on McCormick place, now through Sunday. The convention center is filled with art, celebrities, and of course, cosplay. I attended today in street clothes. My recent unemployment had meant a... Read more »

NWI Comic-Con 2015 RECAP: I'm not Elsa!!

First of all, ladies and gentlemen, this is what Elsa from Frozen ACTUALLY looks like.
One of the best parts of writing Geek Girl Chicago is relationship creation. I’ve made a ton of new friends through blogging, and have become a years-long part of many conventions. Last weekend was the second-ever Northwest Indiana Comic-Con. I returned as a cosplay contest judge. Jess from Fandom Tandem reprised the role, too. The other... Read more »

Kollision Con 2015 RECAP: Mixed Reviews

This Sherlock Holmes could actually play violin. I took his card- can't wait to hear more of his work.
Last weekend, I attended Kollision Con 2015. As I explained in my pre-con writeup, Kollision is another event that has migrated to the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. AnimeCentral, Con Alt Delete, and several other geek weekends all use this space. How did it work out? Well, it really depends on who you ask. Overall, Kollision Con... Read more »

Con Alt Delete 2014 RECAP: Ah, to be young.

Some of the first costumes I saw on Friday.
Last weekend, I returned to my roots- I went to an anime convention. Con Alt Delete 2014 took place at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, the same hotel as my first convention ever. That was thirteen years ago. So, a wall of nostalgia hit me the second I entered. Con Alt Delete is a young people’s... Read more »

Chicago TARDIS 2014 RECAP: Fifty Ways to Use a Westin

The most charming thing about this LEGO Eleven is the matching, fabric suit that's sticking out from the box. :)
One week ago, I was getting my badge for Chicago TARDIS 2014. I wasn’t sure I was going to have fun. Even though I’ve loved Doctor Who for almost a decade, I haven’t watched the Capaldi era. Would I still fit in? My friends found me immediately. First, it was JB from WHO 37. Then, a... Read more »

Windycon 41 RECAP: Thank you, thank you, thank you

Little Red Riding Hood was BY FAR the most popular character at the convention. Even better, almost all of them came with wolf pups.
I’m having a tough time starting my recap of Windycon 41. The weekend was a whirlwind. Never before have I worked so hard at a convention. I was Fan Guest of Honor, and wow- being the ultimate fan is FUN. I arrived at the Westin Lombard on Thursday, November 13th. I checked in, and immediately learned... Read more »

My Childhood Self Chose an X-Files Costume over Friendship

Over fifteen years ago (6th grade? 7th grade?) I dressed up as Agent Dana Scully for Halloween. I was so into The X-Files back then. My friend Therese and I talked about it every day. We traded X-Files VHS tapes, comics… I remember using a toothpick to draw X logos on her nails. That show was... Read more »

Mini Comic Con 2014 RECAP: The Little Library that Could

The first cosplay of the day was a Creeper from Minecraft. Oh no, oh no, oh no- don't let it in the library!!
Last weekend was one of my busiest yet.  With the Chicago Fringe Festival, The Geek Show, and Eisenhower Library’s Mini Comic Con all piled up, I hardly had time to breathe!  I gotta say, though- I had ALL the fun.  Thank you to everyone who met me at these venues. I spent all of Saturday... Read more »

This GEEKend: Mini Comic Con, Bit Bash, The Geek Show, and more

I’m feeling kind of down, geeks.  My husband and I failed to get a Hyatt room for Dragon Con 2015 this morning.  Yes, the same Dragon Con that ended less than a week ago is already selling out roomspace for 2015.  We’ll just have to hope something opens up.  Weeks and weeks of unwarranted stress,... 2 Audition Opportunities for the Chicago Geek with a Theatrical Streak

Little-known fact: While my college major was Communications, one of my two minors was Theatre.  Don’t let the term “minor” fool you, though.  To get the word “Theatre” on my diploma AT ALL, I had to work hundreds of hours on stage and in the shop.  I love performance to this day.  I have to...
