Mini Comic Con 2014 RECAP: The Little Library that Could

The first cosplay of the day was a Creeper from Minecraft. Oh no, oh no, oh no- don't let it in the library!!
Last weekend was one of my busiest yet.  With the Chicago Fringe Festival, The Geek Show, and Eisenhower Library’s Mini Comic Con all piled up, I hardly had time to breathe!  I gotta say, though- I had ALL the fun.  Thank you to everyone who met me at these venues. I spent all of Saturday... Read more »

This GEEKend: Mini Comic Con, Bit Bash, The Geek Show, and more

I’m feeling kind of down, geeks.  My husband and I failed to get a Hyatt room for Dragon Con 2015 this morning.  Yes, the same Dragon Con that ended less than a week ago is already selling out roomspace for 2015.  We’ll just have to hope something opens up.  Weeks and weeks of unwarranted stress,... 2 Audition Opportunities for the Chicago Geek with a Theatrical Streak

Little-known fact: While my college major was Communications, one of my two minors was Theatre.  Don’t let the term “minor” fool you, though.  To get the word “Theatre” on my diploma AT ALL, I had to work hundreds of hours on stage and in the shop.  I love performance to this day.  I have to... Anime Midwest 2014 RECAP: Personal Hygiene and My Return to Anime

These Luteces are real-life brother and sister. So patriotic on the 4th of July!
I remember my first-ever convention.  It was Anime Central.  At the time, I was a bullied high school student.  Despite getting in big trouble with my chaperone for accidentally separating from the group (oops), I had an awesome con.  It was really my first experience with other geeks.  Every cosplayer was beautiful.  Every piece of... Phoenix Comicon 2014 RECAP: a Geeky Desert Oasis - Guest Blog by Susan Richmond

This Silver Surfer said it took under an hour to apply all that body paint. Maybe I should have asked how long it takes to remove it all, because that sounds super daunting!
I try to cover as many conventions as I can in the Chicago area.  When I leave the state, I consider it vacation time and do no work for the blog.  My best friend Susan, however, lives in Arizona.  She was planning a trip to Phoenix Comicon, 6/5-6/8, 2014 in the Phoenix Convention Center.  She offered... This GEEKend: Anime Central, Doctor Who Cosplay Night, and Space Happens!

Well, geeks- I made it to May 15th before thinking about this year’s Halloween costume.  Agent Scully?  Betty Grof?  Queen Elsa?? …My earliness isn’t entirely my fault.  Halloween is a big deal at my day job, and it was mentioned in a corporate context.  Now, my favorite holiday is in my head.  It shouldn’t be!... C2E2 2014 SUNDAY Recap: In Which I Buy Everything X-Files

I saw The Eleventh Doctor Whooves almost immediately on Sunday. For a split second, I wondered how he could hold that screwdriver in his mouth all day. Then, I felt stupid.

The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo came to a heroic conclusion on Sunday.  I ended up wearing street clothes, as my feet would simply NOT accept my Daenerys shoes.  This was likely for the best.  In sneakers and... C2E2 2014 FRIDAY Recap: The Fun Has Just Begun!

What do you do when you run into a cosplayer with the same costume as you? Join forces and become even stronger! These Power Girls have the right idea.
For the first time ever, I’m splitting Geek Girl Chicago’s convention coverage into several parts.  After just one day at C2E2 2014, I have enough photos to rival most previous galleries.  I want to make sure every cosplayer I meet gets recognized.  Thus, GGC‘s weekend at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo will be presented... Chi-Fi 0 Recap: When in Doubt, Throw a Party

Lilith from Borderlands.
We’ve all heard the tale of how the original Chi-Fi concept was canceled.  Now, it’s time to recap the event that DID occur: Chi-Fi 0.  This one-day celebration was held on Saturday, March 29th, at the Palmer House Hilton.  It felt more like a party than a convention.  Sometimes, though- particularly after controversy- a party is exactly...
