This GEEKend: SoyCon, Mighty Con, and Lake Count.i.Con

Yyyyyup, it's convention season!  I can tell because my Google calendar is filled top to bottom with small, local cons.  There are so many nearby, in fact, that they are now triple-overlapping one another.  A person can't possibly attend them all!  Hopefully, a bit of information from GGC can help you choose.

Here are three conventions happening in the Chicago area this GEEKend, each with its own merits:

1. Mighty Con - I've mentioned Mighty Con before, because it happens multiple times a year.  The last Illinois variant was in February.  Now, Mighty Con is returning to the DuPage County Fairgrounds for more fun.  While it's mostly about shopping, Mighty will be welcoming a few guest artists: Mikey Babinski, Angel Medina... hey, those guys have BOTH drawn Spider-Man!  Anyway, there will be plenty of comics, action figures, and games to buy.  If you're itching to add stuff to your collection, Mighty Con is the show for you. (Saturday, June 28th, 2014.  10AM-5PM.  DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 Manchester Rd., Wheaton, Buildings 2 and 3.  Adults $5, kids under 12 FREE.  Official Site * Facebook * Twitter)

2. SoyCon 7 - Not so much into retail therapy?  How about cosplaying?  SoyCon is the Midwest's largest cosplay gathering.  The event is always outdoors, with a tasty potluck.  Unlike other conventions, SoyCon plans lots of active fun in the sun.  This year's meetup is school-themed, so activities will include a pep rally, dodge ball, and a show and tell/talent show.  Enjoy the outdoors!  ...Just watch social media.  If it rains, the whole thing may be a no-go.  (Saturday, June 28th and Sunday, June 29th, 2014.  11AM-8PM.  Ned Brown's Meadow, Grove #29, Rolling Meadows.  FREE with potluck contribution.  Facebook * Twitter * Tumblr)

3. Lake Count.i.Con - The third convention option is Lake Count-i-Con, which sounds like it will be an "all-rounder" experience.  The vendors' space will boast over 100 tables, with guests not only from the art world, but also paranormal investigation.  Two game rooms will host tournaments (Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart.)  I'm particularly stoked about the miniatures painting workshop.  Local group We Are Cosplay has its name all over the Cosplay Idol competition.  I've heard judges will include Skeletor and Deadpool, who... totally are experts in sewing craftsmanship right??  Uh... (Saturday, June 28th, and Sunday, June 29th, 2014. 12PM-6PM.  Cultural & Civic Center, 2007 N. Civic Center Way, Round Lake Beach.  Adults $5, kids under 12 FREE.  Official Site * Facebook)

Oh, what... you DON'T like conventions?  Well, gentle reader, there's always Improvised Star Trek, Dodgeball Dungeon, and The Lord of the Wrigley: Fellowship of the Cubs.  My next adventure will be Anime Midwest.

Speaking of events, if any of you geeks attend a show, party, or other shindig because you read about it here- make it known!  The more Geek Girl Chicago is seen as a trusted, reliable source for Chicago's geeks, the more press releases and news I receive.

Help make GGC bigger and better- tell 'em I sent ya!  :D
