It felt like I was doing a ton of GEEKend posts in May. Alas! I was! This is one of those mystical months with five weekends in it, and thus, three paychecks!! The extra cash is coming at just the right time. This weekend's big events both offer a slew of merch to buy. Whether you love big-time fandoms, or are searching for something new and obscure, this GEEKend is for you.
SATURDAY, MAY 31st:
TCS Convention - First, the acronym stands for "Toys, Comics, Statues." Attendees will find those items in abundance at TCS. The one-day event calls itself a "cozy" show. Presented by Leo Guerrero, it will feature over 50 vendors selling- you guessed it- toys, comics, and statues. I love this type of gathering. Seeing the whole space takes just an hour or two. I always leave with a couple of comics and something new for my statue shelf. Then, I still have lots of daylight left for fun elsewhere. Try it out! If you can't make it to the 'burbs tomorrow, though, another TCS is coming our way in November. (Saturday, May 31st, 10AM-4PM. Orland Park Civic Center, 14750 Ravinia Ave., Orland Park. $3 adults, $1 kids under 12. Facebook.)
CAKE - Oh, look- another acronym! This time, it's the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo. ..."Comics" gets a "K" because... reasons. CAKE celebrates Chicago's legacy of underground comic artists- a legacy that is still being written today. Art will be for sale, of course, but the activity doesn't stop there. Panels and discussions about the industry will be held all weekend. Scheduled guest appearances include Tony Millionaire, Anya Davidson, Hellen Jo, and more. Plus, local shops are putting up related events throughout the surrounding month. There's a reading at Galerie F tonight! (Saturday, May 31st, and Sunday, June 1st. Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted. FREE. Official Site.)
Woo-hoo! I have an extra paycheck this month to spend on comics and statues!! ...Wait, wait, no. Car insurance payment is due. Nevermind. I guess I'll live vicariously through your pocketbook, gentle reader. ;)
