Oh my GOSH! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to all of the geeks who brought Geek Girl Chicago's Facebook fan page to over 1,000 Likes. Almost 100 people started following the blog immediately after C2E2. I hope you all stick around and love what you read. I am honored. :)
Speaking of C2E2, I don't know why I expected the first weekend after the con to be laid-back. Chicago's geek community doesn't rest. This GEEKend, our city will be celebrating two pronouns that are basically sacred in fandom- Joss Whedon and Star Wars. I'm helping GGC's main photographer move into her new place tomorrow. We'll see if I can make it to either of these events:
SATURDAY, May 3rd:
Joss Whedon: A Celebration - For real. If you don't know who Joss Whedon is, I don't know what you're doing here. He's the genius behind Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Avengers, and so much more. Joss Whedon is known for his comedy, strong female characters, and gut-wrenching character deaths.
Saturday's event at DePaul is an intellectual one. Fans will gather at DePaul university for panels, screenings, and creativity. I'm excited about discussions on gender and religion, as well as writing and prop-making workshops. Shiny! (Saturday, May 3rd, 9AM-6PM. DePaul University College of Communications, 14 E. Jackson. FREE. Facebook.)
SUNDAY, May 4th:
May the Fourth, A Star Wars Celebration - I've become a lame, weird adult. Several times today, I've gotten giddy over the fact that, on Sunday, I'll get to tell my employees, "May the Fourth be with you." Ha! Hahahaha!! ...Right.
May the Fourth really IS Star Wars Day, and the geeks at the Public House Theater will be throwing a party. The films- ONLY THE ORIGINAL ONES- will be screened. Everyone is asked to bring a potluck item, and an RSVP is required, but the event is free. It's basically going to be a bunch of people hanging out, eating, and being glad that Star Wars was made. Solid. (Sunday, May 4th, 11AM-10PM. The Public House Theatre, 3914 N. Clark. FREE, RSVP HERE.)
Joss is boss, and The Force is The Force, of course. Have fun, geeks, and may the Force be with you.
Now that my Facebook is doing so well, my Twitter could use a boost. Check out GGC's Tweets! Sooooo many selfies... and don't forget, e-mail subscription is always an option. Type your email address in the box and click the "create subscription" button. My list is completely spam free, and you can opt out at any time.
