Beercades (that's "beer arcades," gentle reader) are popping up all over Chicago. Emporium and Headquarters are opening second locations. I just visited Replay for the first time. They're all a blast, but I'm admittedly easy to please. Beer + video games = My Happy Place.
If there's any downside to beercades, it's their overwhelming popularity. On a busy Friday night, it's easy to feel like a jerk when you want to play more than 1 round of any game. BUCKit List Events, Lakeshore Beverage, and Tallgrass Brewery have come up with a solution. Imagine getting your fair share of game time, a fantastic summer activity, and an opportunity to prove your superiority. It's Chicago's FIRST Arcade Tournament League!
No pro gaming experience is required to join. The league concept is all for fun. Each participant will receive free play on tournament games, a t-shirt, and special pricing on food and drinks. Winning teams will score premiere gift certificates to their respective venue. I'm not really interested in the prizes, though. I mean, I'm terrible at NBA Jam, mediocre at Turtles in Time... but that's fine. The social aspect is most valuable to me.*
One iteration of the tournament starts tomorrow, May 7th, at Headquarters- 2833 N. Sheffield. Every Wednesday for 9-10 weeks, teams will face off at new games. A second tournament kicks off June 17th at Emporium- 1366 N. Milwaukee. This one will be on Tuesdays, so you have options depending on availability and neighborhood.

*This may or may not be me justifying how bad I am at retro arcade games.
Now, who's craving some 8-Bit Ale? I sure am!
