C2E2 2014: The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo is Upon Us!!

Time flies.  I got so wrapped up in wedding planning that I hardly noticed- it's time for C2E2, the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo. After comic shop appearances, bar parties, and the St. Patty's parade, it's finally here!  Rejoice, geeks!!

C2E2 is the Midwest's premiere pop culture event.  It's pretty much the biggest thing Geek Girl Chicago covers.  I can't wait to meet readers, score some swag, and share stories.  Plus, I'm looking to assemble my biggest photo gallery ever- that is, if C2E2 ever gets back to my photographer about her press pass. *ahem*

It always seems like Wizard World gets the best guests.  However, C2E2 has landed some nice celebs for 2014.  There will be a group of Game of Thrones stars (HODOR), reunions for The Crow and 24, The Thrilling Adventure Hour, tons of comic artists, voice actors, and more.  I'm happy to see Stan Lee healthy and making appearances again. Also, I'm told that pro wrestling is still a big deal to many people (?!)  C2E2 is hoping to attract those fans; Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Mick Foley, and other classics will be in the house.

Personally, I'm psyched to see lots of local geek gurus.  The Nerdologues, Geek Bar, and Of Dice and Men will all be doing what they do best.  There will even be some sweet after parties with Threadless and the Glitter Guild.  Here are a few panels I'm particularly looking forward to:

FRIDAY, APRIL 25th:

End Bullying! Responding to Cruelty in Our Culture - I was bullied relentlessly as a child, to the point where it still affects my self-confidence and self-worth today.  I just have to plug this panel.  Carrie Goldman is a ChicagoNow associate of mine. She's legit, and has some useful things to say about geekdom, aggression in media, and what we can all do. (Friday, April 25th, 5:30 PM, S403)

How to be a Nerd for a Living - Real talk with Lauren: I don't really profit off of Geek Girl Chicago. The stipend I receive is less than a tank's worth of gas, so really, all of this is for love alone.  This panel will explain jobs geeks can pursue in comics, gaming, and entertainment.  I hope I learn something.  Thinking about career too much sends me into quarter-life crisis mode...  (Friday, April 25th, 5:30 PM, S404ab)

SATURDAY, APRIL 26th

Glass Ceilings, Missing Stairs & Gatekeepers - This week, I've spent time with ladies from Raks Geek and Sugar Gamers.  During both hangouts, the topic of continued sexism in fandom arose.  Geek culture is glorious 90% of the time.  However, all of us are frequently quizzed, objectified and called "fake."  Why does this still happen?  Both genders from all sects of local geekdom will discuss.  (Saturday, April 26th, 2:45 PM, S401ab)

Rotten Tomatoes Critics vs. Fans - I always look at Rotten Tomatoes before I go to see a movie.  I pretty much never take the site's advice, though.  Ten critics, including Richard Roeper, fully intend on teaching me a lesson.  The Rotten Tomatoes team will debate the audience's favorite movies.  (Saturday, April 26th, 12:15 PM, S403)

Code Monkey Save World - Jonathan Coulton is basically a god of geek music.  His songs about lonely scientists, sea monsters, Tom Cruise, and IKEA are legendary.  He hasn't come to Chicago in a while, perhaps because he's working on a comic called Code Monkey Save World?  Writer Greg Pak promises to "reveal all" about the graphic novel's development. (Saturday, April 26th, 7:45 PM, S401ab)

SUNDAY, APRIL 27th

Masks and Mask Making - I'm always looking for a new skill to learn for cosplay.  Sunday, Jeff Semmerling from Inside Out Art Studio will be sharing his leather mask-making technique.  Attendees will also get to see masked performances, and learn about masks in classroom education.  Sounds like a ton of fun packed into one cool hour! (Sunday, April 27th, 10:45 AM, C2E2 LIVE! Stage)

You Can Be a "Real Life Superhero!" - OK, not to be grim, but I've been thinking a lot about superheroes what with the continued gun violence in Chicago.  I haven't been pleased with the latest police press conferences.  I'm not saying real life superheroes are the answer, but hey, wouldn't that be amazing?  Panelists Crimson Catalyst, Crusader Prime, Razorhawk, and others will talk about their work, from charity events to actual crime-fighting.  Get 'em, heroes.  (Sunday, April 27th, 2:30 PM, S401ab)
