You can tell Spring is here. Birds are chirping, Chicago cyclists are out on their bikes, and the amount of scheduled geeky events has EXPLODED. *happy sigh*
This list of highlights isn't even comprehensive. I'm skipping The Bad Wolf Scavenger Hunt, for example. ...I KNOW, skipping something called "Bad Wolf?" What has come over me?? There's just too much fun to partake in!
I hope you'll join me at some of the below festivities, this GEEKend and beyond:
TODAY, FRIDAY, MARCH 28th:
The Improvised X-Files - I think I mentioned this fact already, but I have been re-watching The X-Files on Netflix. I love it, but there are definitely recurring themes and tropes. The X-Files is an ideal show for an improv troupe to riff on. Every Friday at The Playground, an episode is created in front of the audience. There's a new at-the-door password each week to get 2-for-1 tickets. This week, the phrase is "The Lone Gunmen." Watch the show's Facebook page for future codes. The Truth in Comedy is Out There, and you can bet I'll be seeing it for myself. (Fridays, 10 PM. The Playground Theater, 3209 N. Halsted. $10. Official Site)
Bat-Hamlet - Yes, this is exactly what it sounds like. Chicago had MacSith a few months back. Now, Corn Productions is giving our city another geeky Shakespeare mashup. In Bat-Hamlet, The Dark Knight prowls across The Bard's verse, looking for revenge against his Jester uncle. The fate of Songbird Boy, O-Feline, and the rest of the cast will unfold tonight through April 26th. So, if you're busy this weekend, you'll have plenty of opportunities to be or not to be in the audience. ...Ha, I crack myself up! (Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 8PM. Cornservatory, 4210 N. Lincoln. $7-15. Official Site * Facebook)
SATURDAY, MARCH 29th:
Chi-Fi 0 - After all of the controversy surrounding Chi-Fi's inaugural convention, The Westin, and the event's cancelation, the big day is finally here. Chi-Fi's staff has organized a sort of pre-convention shindig. It will have all of the expected panels, musical guests, and costumes, just packed into one night. I've never seen a con with programming running this late before; I'm looking forward to it. I will be participating in a Doctor Who fan panel, and moderating a panel on local audio drama. I can't wait to see my friends from Time Crash, The Runaway Five, Geek Bar, Improvised Star Trek, and more. It will be a totally Chicago-centric party, and I'll be there all night as Daenerys. (Saturday, March 29th, 3PM-3AM. Palmer House Hilton, 17 E. Monroe. $20. Official Site * Facebook * Twitter)
SUNDAY, MARCH 30th:
Press START to Drink - One of my favorite movies of all time is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It may get me some hate mail, but I enjoy it a LOT more than the graphic novels. This weekend, Scott Pilgrim gets to off against the inferior (but still pretty cool) Wreck-It Ralph for charity. Chicago Loot Drop will be screening both movies on a 20-foot screen at the Public House Theatre. Guests will partake in brews and banter, with proceeds going to Comer Children's Hospital and Child's Play. Sunday tends to be a work night, but great movies for great causes are SUPER tempting! Plus, Envy Adams is kinda my spirit animal... (Sunday, March 30th, 6PM. The Public House Theatre, 3914 N. Clark. $10, buy tickets HERE. Facebook)
Post below if you'll be at Chi-Fi, gentle reader. I'd love to meet you and get a pic! That said, I'm outta here for now. The geek guy and I got our marriage license today (!!!), and we've earned some celebratory playing of Borderlands 2. ;)
