Today marked the beginning of Chicago Ideas Week. Given the event's presence at the Museum of Science and Industry, I figured CIW was all about science. I was barely scratching the surface! Chicago Ideas Week is a seven-day collaboration between our city's innovation leaders. Creative minds brainstorm "new ideas and actionable results" in many, many fields. The festivities are spread across Chicago and beyond.
Most of CIW's talks and labs are open to the public. Expected attendance is 25,000 people. Admission to each event is $15- refreshing! Local presenters include City Winery, Threadless, Divvy Bikes, Jellyvision, Sol Cafe, and others. Here are a few of the geekiest offerings in the upcoming days. FOR SCIENCE:
Scientific Breakthroughs: Infinite Possibilities - TALK - Science is all around us, and this panel will prove it. New advances in robotics, medicine, and space travel will be discussed by professionals. Basically, a physicist, an astrophysicist, and an astronomer walk into a bar and... have this discussion! (Tuesday, October 15th, 12 PM. Edlis Neeson Theater at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago.)
Space Exploration, Art, and Science - MASTER CLASS - I am a firm believer that arts education is directly connected to scientific innovation. This class will reveal the influence of visual arts on the space sciences. Whoa! BONUS: Dramatic photos of the cosmos set to music. (Wednesday, October 16th, 8AM. Morningstar, 22 W. Washington.)
The 3D Printer Experience: Repair Your World - LAB - When 3D printers become just slightly more affordable, you can bet I'll be purchasing one. They have so much potential! This lab will demonstrate how to fix, build, and repair items with this up-and-coming technology. (Wednesday, October 16th, 10AM. The 3D Printer Experience, 316 N. Clark.)
Brain Games with Marbles: The Brain Store - HQ EVENT - Last Christmas, I bought gifts for several friends at Marbles. The employees there were SO knowledgeable! This week, Marbles will be treating CIW guests to games that exercise "visual perception, word skills, memory, critical thinking and coordination." Quarto, anyone? (Wednesday, October 16th, 12:30 PM. Chicago Ideas Week HQ, 401 N. Michigan.)
Argonne National Lab Tour: Game-Changing Science and Technology - LAB - Argonne is a bit of a hike from Chicago proper, but you can bet CIW-ers will be making the trip. This tour of the Argonne campus will include several areas- the Advanced Photon Source, the Advanced Powertrain Research Facility, and the visualization laboratory. You know you want to see a simulation of a star exploding! (Thursday, October 17th, 1:30 PM. Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Lemont.)
Next: Tomorrow, Today - TALK - A whopping nine experts- scientists, CEOs, and writers- contemplate "What's next?" Their answers just might blow your mind. Come on, jet packs!! (Thursday, October 17th, 7:30 PM. Cadillac Palace Theatre 151 W Randolph.)
Sorry, gentle readers, but I can't guarantee that tickets are still available to all of these picks. However, the Chicago Ideas Week site has dozens of goodies to offer with cheap tickets for grabs. If I didn't have to work, I'd definitely be seeing Iron Chef Cat Cora tomorrow. :) Mmm, Food Network.
Get out there and be inspired, geeks!
