Greetings from Boston! I am currently writing from my fiance's parents' house out East. It's lovely! Even so, I'm keeping you up-to-date on geeky events in Sweet Home Chicago. I've gotta write quickly, though- I'm apparently going to a bachelor party for a friend tonight. Down with classic gender roles!! ;)
Here's what's going on back in Chicagoland for the next few days. FYI, they're all in the suburbs:
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13th:
Underground Retrocade Grand Re-Opening - Remember back in April when a huge storm caused massive flooding throughout the Midwest? Underground Retrocade sure does. Water damage forced the old-school arcade in East Dundee to close. Geek Girl Chicago certainly mourned; one of my female readers set the Tetris high score there! Thankfully, you can't keep a pinball wizard down. Owner Scott Lambert is re-opening in an all-new, West Dundee building tomorrow. The new spot looks great, with plenty of room to show off the vintage games- side art and all! If you're able to make the drive, support this important business. (Friday, September 13th, 5PM. 121 W. Main St., West Dundee. $10+, all-you-can-play. Official Site * Facebook)
Dr. Pete's Feel The Power of the Dork Side - Dr. Pete Ludovice is a "chemical engineering professor by day... stand-up comedian by night." His traveling, one-man show uses humor to get audiences excited about science. Attendees will learn whether or not they're nerds (SPOILERS: Yes, yes they are), how math is both fun and relevant, and why scientists could use some PR help. Whether you love statistics or songs, silliness or smarts, this educational show just might be for you. (Friday, September 13th, 7:30 PM. Illinois Institute of Technology, Rice Campus, 201 E. Loop Road, Room 166. $20 in advance, $25 at the door. For an additional 25% off, use discount code "Boltzmann" HERE. Official Site)
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th:
Can't Stop the Serenity - Browncoats unite in Waukegan! This annual, nationwide charity event for fans of Firefly is always a shiny time. Each year, Whedonites gather to watch both Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and Serenity on the big screen. In addition to the films, this weekend's event will include a costume contest and an INCREDIBLE charity auction. Proceeds go toward Equality Now and the local House of the Good Shepherd. I emcee'd last year and am sad to miss this one. Dust off your best shindig dress and attend. (Saturday, September 14th, 5PM. Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St, Waukegan. $15+, buy tickets HERE. Well, I'm off to a bachelor party, I guess! While the vision in my head contains geek-themed strippers and such, I think it's a lot more likely that we'll end up playing a very bro-y game of Magic: The Gathering. Enjoy the GEEKend! I'll be back in Chicago on Monday.
