Doctor Who fans around the world were just hit with some BIG news: Matt Smith, The Eleventh Doctor, will be stepping down. The Internet is already abuzz with rumors. Could the Twelfth Doctor be female? Black? GINGER AT LAST?! The amount of speculation is astounding given how little we actually know. I say we just take a moment, breathe, and enjoy the present. We can't time travel, after all. ;)
To celebrate Matt Smith's upcoming regeneration, check out these two Chicago shows, now playing. Both are created by real fans of Doctor Who. Thus, they're choc full of fun, adventure, and cheeky references:
1. Who Prov - This is just what it sounds like. Each night, based on audience suggestions, the folks of Who Prov create an episode of Doctor Who. There's a full-sized TARDIS. There's lots of running. The end result is pretty similar to The 'Verse: Another Firefly Story, a previous offering. I still recommend going. I am of the belief that highly-attended geek productions result in MORE new geek productions. Plus, you have to love their Facebook gallery of Photoshopped promotional images; there are FEMALE Doctors!! If only... (Fridays thru June 21st, 7:30 PM. Donny's Skybox @ Second City, 1608 N. Wells. $13, buy tickets HERE.)
2. The Timey Wimey Fantastic Brilliant Extravaganza (Geronimo!) - I saw The Right Brain Project's current work on Friday. Loved. It. The show opens to a deceptively-simple cardboard set and some campy music. Believe me, the cheese is intentional. In a flash, the story becomes delightfully meta- true to genre. The sound design is clever and the singers are talented (though nobody keeps their accents when singing :P). The script is clearly written by Whovians, particularly when it comes to The Doctor himself. Everything from his dialogue to his sudden donning of brainy specs is spot-on. Background characters sometimes pull focus unnecessarily, but one, breathtaking effect got my full attention. ...Spoilers! ;) All in all, I was reminded why I love Doctor Who. The whole thing is BYOB, and the first five Whovians in the door in-costume each night get in free. If I go again, it will definitely be as Rose Tyler. (Fridays and Saturdays, 10:30 PM, and Sundays, 3:00 PM, thru June 23rd. The RBP Rorschach, 4001 N. Ravenswood. $15. E-mail tickets[at]therbp[dot]org.)
I'm really crazy about both of these shows. It's great to see Chicago's geeks making solid art. I always imagined this is what adulthood was like- pretending to be a time traveler forever and ever. :)
...Oh, and by the way, if you want to support the local Doctor Who music scene (really!), check out Time Crash's Kickstarter. America's first Trock Band needs your support for its first album! Tell 'em Geek Girl Chicago sent you.
