WARNING: GIGANTIC SPOILERS FROM THE LATEST EPISODE OF GAME OF THRONES!!
DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE RAINS OF CASTAMERE (...or read A Storm of Swords)!!
The Game of Thrones "Red Wedding" was a TV tragedy 13 years in the making. Long-time readers of A Song of Ice and Fire had known about the twist since 2000. Yesterday, though, a deluge of HBO first-timers witnessed the brutal deaths of Robb Stark, his mother Catelyn, and for good measure, his wife Talisa and unborn baby (a change from the novel).
CUE THE OUTRAGE!! The Twitter account @RedWeddingTears is a treasure trove of fan meltdowns, as are the hashtags #RedWedding and #GameofThrones. Geek website io9 has assembled 100 favorites. Common themes include uncontrollable crying, empty threats to boycott the show, and (hopefully) empty threats on author George R. R. Martin's life. Wowzers. I'm particularly drawn to Tweets that misspell words, including the names of so-called favorite characters.
...I don't mean to be a jerk. I just really wish people would read the books! The benefits of reading are innumerable. Plus, when you read, you don't have to hear bad news 13 years late. ;)
Here are my 20 favorite Red Wedding response Tweets (with commentary!) in no particular order:
