This GEEKend: Raks Geek Belly Dancing and Anime World Chicago

I just got home from a live recording of Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!  It was hilarious and informative- highly recommended to any Chicago NPR geeks.  I'm pretty exhausted, but this GEEKend's cool events begin today.  Must... blog... now...

1. Raks Geek - Fun fact: I dabble in belly dance/raqs sharqi.  However, I haven't donned my finger cymbals since moving into the city.  Hearing about Raks Geek caused me some regret.  THIS is the type of belly dancing gig I'd wanted to find in Chicago!

Read My Hips and the Chicago Fire Tribe are collaborating for two nights of belly dancing.  The program will put a geeky spin on some standard props and themes.  Expect a Doctor Who fan dance, a Legend of Zelda sword routine, and fire-spinning  for the Pyro in all of us.

Raks Geek will be a full-on celebration.  Both nights will feature costume contests, themed drinks, and musical performances by il Troubadore- Klingon friends of this blog.  Just one question- in the promo images, why isn't the lightsaber cutting the katana in half?  And why is the Tenth Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver glowing red?!  ...OK, sorry, that was two questions.    (Friday, August 3rd, and Saturday, August 4th, 11PM.  Viaduct Theater, 3111 N. Western.  $15.)

Two ladies of Raks Geek, throwing it down.

2. Anime World Chicago - Wow, I must not have been paying attention for the past 2 years; these anime conventions are popping up like Oddishes!  ...Get it?  Because Oddish is the "weed Pokemon," so they're popping up like-

Forget it.

Anime World Chicago is being produced by Propworx.  I've gotten a screen-used Battlestar Galactica prop or two from them, so I'm on board!  Programming will be standard fare- costume contests, gaming, a late-night dance, etc.  The schedule comes in convenient app form. Propworx also has some money, so AWC's guests are shiny: a motion capture artist from Mortal Kombat, a kawaii J-POP singer, martial arts instructors, a voice over casting network, cosplay experts, and several big-name American voice actors.  No matter what sector of anime fandom you're from, you're sure to connect with something.  (Friday, August 3rd-Sunday, August 5th.  Hyatt Regency O'Hare, 9300 Bryn Mawr Ave., Rosemont.  $19.95-24.95/day, $45/weekend.)

The adorable mascot of Anime World Chicago.

Have a dazzling GEEKend! I'm off to bed.  Seriously.  I'm not even going to play SW:TOR.  ...Much.
