This GEEKend: Anime Midwest, Nerdologues, and Cosplay for Charity

Sorry I've been away for a bit, readers.  I was taking my own advice, and moving into a fabulously geeky apartment!  I'm still surrounded by boxes, but I'm ready to get out into the world, aren't you?  Here are my top suggestions for this GEEKend:

ALL WEEKEND: Anime Midwest - Smaller than ACen, Anime Midwest is doing a lot to make its mark.  The convention sponsored a cosplay prom earlier this year.  Now, the big weekend is here!  The guests are the usual Japanese animation fare- Greg Ayres and Shinichi Watanabe, for example.  However, the programming schedule is rich.  There's improv comedy, origami, a DJ workshop, and something called "Dante's Guide on How to Pick Up Women."  If they mean Dante from Devil May Cry, I am so in. ;)  I'll be at Anime Midwest on Saturday, dressed as Aerith from FFVII: Crisis Core, and judging the costume contest!  I'll have a camera and GGC business cards in my flower basket, so please, please, please say "Konnichiwa!" (Friday-Sunday, July 6th-8th. Wyndham Lisle/Naperville, 3000 Warrenville Rd. $25 one-day, $35 weekend.)

TONIGHT- FRIDAY: The Nerdologues: The Skywalking Dead - Usually, an evening with The Nerdologues centers around personal monologues.  Every Friday in July, though, they'll be presenting a sketch comedy show.  The theme of The Skywalking Dead is "the end of the world"- how it might happen, why our cultures loves the concept, and... zombies, apparently.  Zombie are so hot right now. (Fridays, July 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th, 10PM.  The Playground Theater, 3209 N. Halsted.  $10, BYOB.)

SATURDAY: Nerds Dance Party - Close on the heels of last weekend's Nerdfest, Clown Monkey and Miss Demonix bring us another shindig.  Aaron Ackerson and Peter Propaganda will be spinning geek music.  From there, it gets... interesting.  Nerds (as in the candy) will be available, as will toothbrushes, to get that sugar off of your teeth.  A trivia game show will test only the most seasoned geeks, with prizes from local Brainstorm Comics.  Sounds like the perfect Anime Midwest after party!  (Saturday, July 7th, 10PM.  Live Wire Lounge, 3394 N. Milwaukee.  FREE.)

SATURDAY: Cosplay at the Salvation Army - For all of you who get costume pieces from Salvation Army stores, it's time to give back.   Several homeless and emergency shelters in Chicago are being shut down; this is the cosplay community's response.  Interested parties can wear kid-friendly costumes (or street clothes!) to volunteer at the Harbor Light Center location.  This location provides services for alcohol and substance abusers, family items, as well as church and transitional job programs.  Perhaps some Anime Midwest folk could carpool?  (Saturday, July 7th, 2PM.  1515 W. Monroe.  Contact with questions.)

Stay cool, stay safe, and stay tuned for more articles.  GGC is back in full swing!

  • I like the cosplay costume,How about this coat?
    Sherlock coat
    I like it very much.

  • In reply to Ian Yxl:

Your link has an extra quotation mark in it, but I was able to find the coat on the website. Looks good- totally recognizable as Sherlock! You'd need the hair and maybe a scarf to complete the look. Where would you wear this costume?
