Pictures from PlayCHIC 2014, the Chicago Toy and Game Fair's fashion show

Mayfair Games had puppeteers wandering around. The sheep is a key part of their best-selling board game, Settlers of Catan.
I try to keep up with geeky events in Chicago, but sometimes, one slips by me. I almost missed out on PlayCHIC 2014. This toy and game-inspired fashion show is apparently part of the Chicago Toy and Game Fair. I’ve BEEN to ChiTAG. I’ve reviewed games I discovered at ChiTAG. Even so, I had no idea... Read more »

Windycon 41 RECAP: Thank you, thank you, thank you

Little Red Riding Hood was BY FAR the most popular character at the convention. Even better, almost all of them came with wolf pups.
I’m having a tough time starting my recap of Windycon 41. The weekend was a whirlwind. Never before have I worked so hard at a convention. I was Fan Guest of Honor, and wow- being the ultimate fan is FUN. I arrived at the Westin Lombard on Thursday, November 13th. I checked in, and immediately learned... Read more »

My Childhood Self Chose an X-Files Costume over Friendship

Over fifteen years ago (6th grade? 7th grade?) I dressed up as Agent Dana Scully for Halloween. I was so into The X-Files back then. My friend Therese and I talked about it every day. We traded X-Files VHS tapes, comics… I remember using a toothpick to draw X logos on her nails. That show was... Read more »

17 Things at Toys R Us Worse than Breaking Bad Action Figures

The violence, sexuality, and general darkness of Sin City affect me WAY more viscerally than anything in Breaking Bad. Marv here comes with a gasoline can! In the movie, he uses this to burn someone's building down, before cutting that person's arms and legs off, and feeding him to his own pet. Wow. WOW. THIS can stay at Toys R Us, but Breaking Bad can't? Do some research before you take action, petition-signers.
AMC’s Breaking Bad is one of the greatest TV shows of all time. So, it’s no surprise that there are Breaking Bad action figures. Adults (geeks in particular) love collectibles that commemorate their favorite works of fiction. The Breaking Bad line of action figures is cool, highly-detailed, and definitely NOT for children. One Walter White/Heisenberg toy... Read more »

The Science of Chicago Traffic: STAY IN YOUR LANE!!

Picture this: You’re driving on the Kennedy, Eisenhower, Stevenson, or other Chicago expressway. Your lane slows down. What do you do? If your answer is “quickly jump into a lane that looks like it’s moving faster,” 1. I hate you, 2. Knock it off. When you pull this move (and similar ones), you make traffic worse.... Read more »

Valar Morghulis: Pictures from the Latest Game of Thrones Ommegang Beer Party

This Khaleesi's hand-made dragon egg IS ALSO A PURSE!!! OMG.
My current temperature is 102.3. Bronchitis! Nearly pneumonia! Don’t worry, gentle reader; I’m on antibiotics and getting lots of rest. This constant feeling of burning, however, has proven one thing: I am not really the Khaleesi, the Unburnt, the Mother of Dragons. I’d bet Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones never gets a fever… or... Read more »
