In this second part of the Sian Ka’an experience in the Eco-Hula video series, my team and I swim in ancient Mayan canals surrounded by mangroves at Sian Ka’an, a UNESCO world heritage biosphere reserve in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
During this trip we meet our amazing guide, Antonio, who is a Mayan descendant. His father was a shaman for the Mayan people, and he has lived his entire life on the 1.3 million acre reserve and speaks three languages.
Swimming in a canal between Mexican mangroves and savannah was a bit scary; I was terrified we would be eaten by crocodiles. Thankfully, the canal is free of fish, and not a crocodile target. Instead, we were able to experience touching mangroves and wild nature up close – it was amazingly beautiful.
The biggest filming challenge was trying not to get our expensive tv camera wet while floating in the canal. Watch the video and see more of the astounding journey we had in the canals of Sian Ka’an, Mexico on the Riviera Maya.

*Note – Because the FTC requires it, I am noting that the Mayan Riviera Tourism group sponsored this trip. I was not told what to document or how to document the experience, we were simply asked to attend and film – anything expressed in posts related to the activities is my own opinion expressed from my own personal experience.
