Visiting a World Class Eco-Park Compost Facility in Mexico - An Adventure in Eco Travel and Green Living

Composting is the best way to reuse natural materials and is something all
restaurants and corporate facilities should be doing as well. Why? Yard
clippings and food scraps make up over a quarter of the solid waste in the
United States landfills. Composting reduces garden and kitchen waste in a
non-toxic fashion and is translated into "gold" for the garden. It is free to
make, which saves you money. Composting for residential, business, and
industrial is simply a great green choice.

Above you see the first step of the composting process at the Xel-Ha facility. Note the paper toweling as well as fruit, meat, and vegetables included in the pile.

 

In the below video you get to meet Saitra Perez-Cabrera, the recycling and
composting facility manager for a large jungle eco-park located on the Mayan
Riviera coast in Mexico. Xel-Ha,
Saitra's eco-park, feeds up to 11,000 people per day and its kitchen system
features a fantastic organic recycling program whereby all the food waste is
recycled and composted, even the meats and bones. You can see this demonstrated
in the video. All paper, plastic, and metal is recycled on the property and we
visit the recycling and compost facility with Saitra as a guide, she is the
biologist who runs the recycling and composting program.

Set in middle of the Yucatan jungle, Xel-Ha (pronounced "shell-ha") is a protected
inlet set near Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. It is touted as being a natural
aquarium park, and is indeed beautiful. Snorkeling in the crystal  clear ocean
waters at Xel-Ha is very much like swimming in an aquarium. It is free of walls
and glass panes, has no man-made lights or feeding mechanisms, and has over 70
species of colorful fish.

Behind the scenes: It takes a lot of people to make an eco-travel video. Here you see the Director of the video, Terry Brooks, trying to get everyone (Sound Tech, Tour Guides, and Shooting Assistants) to stop goofing off late into the shoot. Are you kidding? We were having too much fun!
