Greening your office is simply another phrase for "preventing waste and
saving money". Americans who are employed spend more time working than any other
activity in their day - over nine hours. With offices accounting for over a
fifth of all energy consumption, it becomes clear that preventing waste in the
workplace is as important as doing the same at home.
When faced with a long list of new greening ideas for the office, many feel
overwhelmed. Start simply with the two largest consumption items, for most
offices this is electricity and paper use.
- Reduce paper consumption by starting a paper recycling program for your
office. Best yet, use NO paper and digitize the entire office. When you must use
paper, be sure to use post-consumer recycled, with a low percentage of chlorine
bleach. Print and copy on both sides of the paper. Stop using extra products
such as sticky notes, when you can use the backs of used copy paper
instead. - Use less electricity by turning out the lights whenever possible and using
daylight only if you have an office near a window. Unplug unused electronics.
Turn computers off when you will not be in the office and set all equipment to
"energy-saving" settings. An easy solution - plug hardware into a power strip
with an on/off switch and use it to turn everything off at one time.
