Educate Children To Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle - Put Your Thinking Cap On!

Thinking Cap.jpg

Shawna Coronado wearing a "thinking cap" made by her 9 year old daughter.

Stymied by a particularly difficult problem, I sat alone thinking about how to solve the issue. In trots my nine year old with the above delightfully handmade hat. She says, "It's a 'Thinking Cap' to help you with your work! I made it by reusing some old jeans and some stuff from the recycling bin."

Having children learn the "Three R's" - reduce, reuse, and recycle - will encourage a lifetime of money and earth saving experiences!  Reusing and recycling everyday products is much less expensive than buying new. It also saves space in our very over-filled landfills and can actually earn your family money during this difficult economic time.

  • Reduce - reduce the amount of
things you purchase, consuming less means less to throw away.

  • Reuse - keep using the same
things as many times as you can
instead of throwing it out before it is needed.

  • Recycle - find new ways to
    use old things
, and bring metals and paper to recycling centers for processing.

Below is a video showing a creative way to have a child plant seeds utilizing reused boxes. Put your thinking cap on and help your children learn how to save themselves money and make a difference today!

  • Educating kids is so important! It can leave generations changed toward good stewardship of the earth. I honestly believe that I care so much about environmental issues now because it was drilled into me at an early age. Recycling wasn't an option in my house. It was a crime not to recycle something that could be recycled. I remember seeing videos in elementary school of ducks killed by those six-pack plastic soda rings. Things like that made taking care of the earth such a moral issue for me, something that I couldn't help but do on a daily basis. I think when you don't grow up with that mentality, it's much harder to change as an adult. I'm so grateful for the adults in my life as a young child investing thoughtfulness in me!
