Is the town of Waukegan also known as the Home of the Collector? Two sales there within half a mile of each pose the question: why have one when you can have fifty? I took a trip up north to preview the sales for this weekend, November 13 -15.
The first sale at 405 W. Glen Flora, Waukegan
Hours: Friday 10-4, Saturday 11-6 and Sunday 11-3
In the small house, it's evident by the odor that an elderly person has lived there for some time. Per the sale conductor, the owner was a random collector who bought indiscriminately. Dozens of lamps, so much TJMaxx type art, it was also displayed in the bathtub, dish sets on dish sets, glassware on glassware. In the basement were dozens of modern chairs----steel and leather and caned Breuers stacked against the wall.
What I liked were the Swedish and European items in the basement. I bought a vintage but never used Le Creuset casserole ($22) and a Scandinavian Design hanging candlier ($20), one of 5 or 6 that were identical. My shopping partner, Leilani, bought a Le Creuset frying pan ($25) and a set of retro mugs.
Second sale: 412 W. Greenwood, Waukegan
Hours: Friday 10-4 and Saturday 10-4
There was still a large crowd of people in the front yard of the second sale. Having an entry number, they were still waiting to get in the sale, so we passed on it. Instead, my shopping partner, Leilani, and I headed for the ORT thrift shop in Highland Park, which I'll post about later next week. For this sale, follow the address link above for photos of the items in this sale.

It's a good thing I'm nowhere near that sale... because I might be tempted to go overboard.
I would love to go to an estate sale due to the fact that I might find an antique that may be of value like on the Road Show.
