Decorating With Garage Sale Finds

Why just change something when you can change it out? In keeping with the DIY lingo of Decorating TV, I did a quick change out on three frames I bought at a garage sale over the weekend.

It was fate. Three frames were waiting for me in the art corner of the St. Mark's rummage sale. I felt a sense of eureka! on discovering them, because a series of matching frames has been on my shopping list for a few months.  Their powder room pinkness was not exactly a bonus.  Nonetheless, I had a makeover in mind when I bought them for a dollar each.

They revealed a little history as I took them apart:  these weren't illustrations but panels of polished cotton wrapped around foam board. They'd been custom framed at Good's on March 17, 1985.

When stripped of their shell motif, I ended up with----pink frames.

I assembled the materials to give them a new look: can of black spray paint, basic white paper to serve as the matte and a folder of textile samples that came from the Merchandise Mart.

I found the folder while doing a freelance job at the Mart in September.  It was for samples of place mats and came from the showroom of Rightbrain Enterprises on the gift floor.  The color and textures of the samples were frame worthy, I remember thinking when I picked it up.

When the spray paint dried on the frames, I assembled the new art. I cut three pieces of white paper to fit the size of the frames.  Then I arranged the place mat samples on top of them. When I was happy with the arrangement, I used rubber cement to glue them. Rubber cement is perfect for this kind of project---not messy, it's a dry glue that allows you to slide pieces around to get the position the way you want it.

Here's the change out.  What do you think?  Adding in $4 for the bottle rubber cement I bought at Ace, the three pieces come to $7.

  • Yeah, this is cool. I don't like much representational art, but these fit right in with my imaginary industrial loft's decor.

  • Exactly. Tons of stuff scoped out for mine, too.

  • a very modern idea. adds a gallery feel to whatever room you put them in. i was thinking of doing the same thing only using international candy wrappers, what do you think?

  • International candy wrappers---how cool! Would love to see some of them.

  • I like this project. I have been looking for ways to fill some of my wall-space, and it looks like a great way to incorporate interesting textures and colors.

  • I can see these at Restoration Hardware for $35 each! Nice.
