Weekend Round Up: The Lakewood Balmoral Sale

Talk about idyllic. The eye candy architecture, the leafy canopy overhead and the carnival of goods that lined the sidewalks at the Lakewood Balmoral neighborhood's front yard sale on Saturday.

This slice of Edgewater just east of Andersonville puts on the sale each year just after Labor Day. This is the day the neighbors, some who've been collecting all year and some who want to clean out their basement, put their array of household and sundry out there for a song.

This couple, one of them a political blogger, said they were very happy with their list purchases this year:

butcher block table for $30

upholstered chair and ottoman for $20

wood tv tray set $5

shop vac $1o

2 lighting stands

Another pair I met on Magnolia Ave showed me their list wish list of
sales and items written on notebook paper.  This was just one stop in
their day.  Frequent sale junkies, they said the Lakewood Balmoral sale
has been growing in kids and toy items for the last few years as the
neighborhood becomes more family oriented.

Some of the furniture offerings:

Metal table and chair set $79

Round pedestal table $25

Garden chairs $35 each

Retro side tables $15 each

Best sellers for the day, most residents concurred, were books and
CD's, going for 50 cents to a dollar.  Also big in one yard were board
games,  the seller's theory being that people were staying home more.
She had just a few games left:  Monopoly with all the Community Chest
cards there but missing a few Chance and Dr. Ruth's Game of Good Sex
that she admits to playing once.

Off the alley on Magnolia was a garage sale hosted by a longtime
resident who collects and sells at antique malls and shows.  The pyrex
casserole was going for $7 and the vintage linens from $10.

Dishware from family members.  Left - a set of Weiss for $30. Right - Blue Ridge for $25.

Neighborhood resident, Keith, director of a senior center who's lived on his street for 30 years, offered a few things I wish I needed.

Iron bed, asking $75, and the wicker couch and cushions for $20.  If
it didn't sell by the end of the day, Keith said it would go back in
the basement until next year.

  • You are kidding me that those mid-century side tables were only $15 a piece!

  • Unfortunately I didn't get to go to the block sale on Saturday but I did go on Friday to the alley sale on Magnolia. They had lots of great vintage/antique items... I picked up a near mint condition Samsonite hatbox from the 1950s and some fun greeting cards from the 1940s. :)
