The White Sox took Tyler Johnson in the 5th round of the 2017 draft. He spent some time starting for the Gamecocks but has been pitching in high-leverage relief roles in the White Sox system. The 22-year-old has struggled with command and control in the past but improved dramatically in that area so far this season. In 2017, the right hander threw 15.2 innings for Low Class A Kannapolis. He posted a 3.14 FIP and struck out 12 hitters per nine but walked more than 6 batters in the same timeframe. Johnson reported back to Kannapolis to start the 2018 season. His command of the zone was much better. In 27 innings, Tyler posted a 1.87 FIP while cutting his walk rate to 3.3 BB/9. Johnson also averaged 15.3 K/9. He earned a promotion to High-A and has really taken off while pitching for the Winston-Salem Dash. The fireballer is averaging 13.5 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 19.1 innings. He has a 1.85 FIP and a 1.86 ERA to match it.
Johnson pitched in multiple roles at the University of South Carolina but also was the closer for the United States Collegiate National Team. Johnson has a 65-grade fastball that sits in the 93-97 mph range and touches 100. He also possesses a 55-60 grade slider that has improved of late. The slider usually sits in the low 80's and has bite. Johnson locates his fastball well and pounds the lower part of the strike zone. His change-up is just average but he won't need to throw it often in a relief role. At the age of 22, Johnson is old enough to finish the season with Double-A Birmingham in the Southern League but that may not be in the plans. He should continue his fast rise through the minors and could be a bullpen option in Chicago in late 2019 at the earliest.
