A Changing of the Guard

It’s no secret the White Sox had a rough stretch of first round draft picks in the early part of this decade. Recently, Gordon Beckham and Chris Sale have gone a long way to turn that around, but the flops are still fresh in the minds of a lot of Sox fans. This spring Kyle... Read more »

Hot and Cold 7/29-8/4

Charlie Shirek was bumped up to Triple-A for his start this week but it was not one to remember. In 5.2 IP for the Knights Shirek gave up 7 ER (11.12 ERA), allowed 6 hits and 4 walks (1.76 WHIP) while striking out 3. Shirek was lights out to start the year but has battle injuries and mixed form since then. His season numbers now sit at 4.26 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 40 SO/21 BB in 74 IP. Honorable mentions: Stephen Sauer (5 IP, 10.80 ERA, 2 BB/3 SO), Matthew Hopps (5 IP, 9.00 ERA, 1 BB/2 SO) and Matt Zaleski (6 IP, 7.50 ERA, 1 BB/7 SO).
Another trade deadline comes and goes, and with it, the White Sox farm system is further thinned out. While Dan Hudson and David Holmberg will no longer be appearing on the Hot and Cold list, there are still plenty of other prospects to choose from.

Hot and Cold 7/15-7/21

If you thought hitting .516 would be good enough to make you the hitter of the week, you’d be wrong, as Ryan Lee misses out due to an even better week by a certain Winston-Salem Dash outfielder. That’s right, it’s time for another Hot and Cold…

Top 25 Review: 10-6

This post started with a positive (Santos) and will end with one in Morel. He followed up his great Arizona Fall League showing with his best stint as a pro, hitting .326/.376/.440 with the Barons. He silenced some doubters by handling the transition to AA so well and earned a promotion to Charlotte. So far he sits at .256/.293/.333 with the Knights in 117 AB, but has shown progress after a dreadful start there. Importantly, he has just 14 strikeouts in 127 plate appearances. The former Cal Poly star has been one of the 2010 standouts among White Sox minor leaguers.
The midseason top 25 review rolls into the meat of the rankings. Some of these top 10 prospects have raised their stock even further, with one contributing to the White Sox this year, while a couple have been disappointing.

JPNese 7/4

So, the Barons didn’t suck so bad this week.  I’m not going to gush about splitting a series with Mississippi, but it’s better than my previous prediction.  The week didn’t start out so well, losing the first three games and looking bad doing it.  Throw in a rainout on Tuesday, and things looked bleak yet... It’s time for week three’s wrap up as Dan Hudson’s season goes from mediocre to very bad, and Trayce Thompson kicks things off with a blast.
