Sox Sign RHP John Bachanov

As was noted Wednesday by Kevin Goldstein on Twitter, the Sox have signed former 1st round supplemental pick of the Angels, RHP, John Bachanov. Baseball America had this to add in their transaction report: The Angels’ top pick in the ’07 draft, reliever Jon Bachanov follows the Bobby Jenks career path from Anaheim to Chicago.... Read more »

JPNese 9/8

It all ended with a whimper.  A 2-1 loss that seemed almost orchestrated.  Hanging fastballs, defensive indifference in the 8th inning in a 1 run game.  The Barons players excitedly claiming that they would be swinging at everything.  Wouldn’t have been the first time though, in 2007, the lowly Barons squad played their last game... Hot and Cold 8/19-8/25

After back-to-back solid seasons from Matt Zaleski, there was some mild expectation for him in 2010, but he certainly hasn't delivered. Zaleski's appearance this week was particularly disastrous as he managed to give up 6 ER without recording one out. He gave up 4 hits (3x1B, 1xHR), and walked 2. For the season he has a 5.40 ERA with 80 SO/46 BB in 133.1 IP and a 9.66 ERA in his last 10 games. Honorable mentions: Jeff Marquez (5.1 IP, 11.81 ERA, 1 BB/4 SO), Joe Serafin (3.2 IP, 17.18 ERA, 4 BB/2 SO) and Nate Jones (4.2 IP, 7.71 ERA, 4 BB/2 SO).
Another week brings another great start from Andre Rienzo and Trayce Thompson returns to action in style. The week was not so kind to a couple of Knights, however.

JPNese 8/26

Well…break up the Barons.  They’ve gone 8-6 over the past 2 weeks and seemingly increased their win total by almost 25%.  Fantastic timing.  With 11 games to go in the season and a 9 game deficit in the division, it’s more than likely that come Labor Day afternoon, the players will be packing up to... Hot and Cold 8/12-8/18

Justin Edwards looked like a potential breakout candidate after his fast start with Winston-Salem this year, but since his promotion to Birmingham he has been awful, and this week was no exception. In two starts (9.1 IP), Edwards gave up 14 ER (13.50 ERA), allowing 17 hits and 5 walks (2.36 WHIP), while punching out 6. Since his promotion to Birmingham Edwards' ERA is 6.06 and he has 41 SO/28 BB in 90.2 IP. Honorable mentions: Lucas Harrell (4.2 IP, 13.50 ERA, 4 BB/3 SO), Steven Upchurch (8 IP, 10.125 ERA, 3 BB/6 SO) and Joe Serafin (6 IP, 7.50 ERA, 2 BB/1 SO).
Ryan Buch’s breakout continues as Jon Gilmore starts to fade and Justin Edwards’ hot start to the season is almost completely forgotten in this week’s Hot and Cold.

2010 AL Central draft spending

2010 AL Central draft spending
The 2010 Draft signing deadline came and went with no new signing for the White Sox, but plenty of other teams were active, including the Sox’ AL Central counterparts. I take a look at the draft spending for each team in the Central to see if the White Sox are extremely cheap, or if it’s... Read more »

JPNese 8/15

So basically, if I don’t show up, the Barons win.  I missed the games on the 9th, 10th and 11th due to recovery from “surgery.”  No need for painkillers, I’m a man.  Anyway, they won all three games, taking 4 out of 5 in the series and have succesfully avoided the dreaded 100 loss season.  Whoopty... Hot and Cold 8/5-8/11

When you have a player who posts a 1.349 OPS and doesn’t make it as the hot hitter of the week, you know it’s been a good week on the offensive side of the ball.

2010 draft performance/stats update

2010 draft performance/stats update
It’s been just over 2 months since the draft and most of the top picks have been signed, and signed for a while, so I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how they were performing. Now it should be noted that sample sizes of this size are relatively meaningless, but it’s... Read more »

Hot and Cold 7/29-8/4

Charlie Shirek was bumped up to Triple-A for his start this week but it was not one to remember. In 5.2 IP for the Knights Shirek gave up 7 ER (11.12 ERA), allowed 6 hits and 4 walks (1.76 WHIP) while striking out 3. Shirek was lights out to start the year but has battle injuries and mixed form since then. His season numbers now sit at 4.26 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 40 SO/21 BB in 74 IP. Honorable mentions: Stephen Sauer (5 IP, 10.80 ERA, 2 BB/3 SO), Matthew Hopps (5 IP, 9.00 ERA, 1 BB/2 SO) and Matt Zaleski (6 IP, 7.50 ERA, 1 BB/7 SO).
Another trade deadline comes and goes, and with it, the White Sox farm system is further thinned out. While Dan Hudson and David Holmberg will no longer be appearing on the Hot and Cold list, there are still plenty of other prospects to choose from.
