Upchurch was a very good prospect out of high school that fell in the draft because of his commitment to Auburn. The Sox signed him for above slot and landed a pitcher that projected well. His fastball currently sits in the low 90s and scouts think he might be able to add more velocity as he fills out. It also has decent movement. He has a very good changeup that will keep him as a starter. His breaking stuff has been inconsistent. If Upchurch can add more velocity and be more consistent with his secondary pitches, he will be an excellent prospect. The problem is, the consistency hasn't been there. Upchurch spent three years in rookie ball, only showing gradual progress. He is a good control pitcher, but doesn't strike many batters out. The Alabama native is still young enough to hope for solid improvement, but statistically he has been unable to stand out.
