Scouting report
A starter throughout his college career, Ryan Buch has gone back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen since joining the White Sox organization and the results have been mostly good. He's a raw power pitcher with two plus pitches in his low-to-mid 90's fastball and classic 12-to-6 curveball. The curve in particular is a real weapon for Buch and some have rated it as a plus-plus pitch. His changeup is unrefined and he hasn't needed it much in his career to date. Command is Buch's Achilles heel; he has knockout stuff, but doesn't always know where it's going. As we've seen countless times, fastball command is near essential for a Major League pitcher. The former Monmouth ace did well in the low minors, but struggled after receiving a promotion to Winston-Salem in 2011 before an injury halted his season. Ryan Buch has the potential to become a mid-rotation starter if he can develop the changeup and improve his command, but if the Sox decide they like him as a reliever long-term, he profiles as a back of the bullpen type arm with closer upside.
