Scouting Report:

The White Sox used their 5th round pick in the 2018 draft to select Stiever out of Indiana University. The 21-year-old pitched three seasons for the Hoosiers and led the Big Ten in strikeouts last spring. Coming out of the state of Wisconsin as a prep, Jonathan was named First Team All-State as a pitcher and as a WR/DB in football as well. In 2016, the right-hander pitched in the New England Collegiate league and was also a member of the Brewster Whitecaps while participating in the Cape Cod League in 2017. Stiever was the 88th ranked prospect in the 2018 draft class according to mlbpipeline.com. The former Hoosier only threw in 13 contests in the White Sox system last year after completing a full season in college. In 28 innings pitched for the Great Falls Voyagers, Stiever posted an ERA of 4.14 with 39 K and 9 BB and a WHIP of 1.14. Bill Mitchell, Baseball America writer who handles the league Top 20 for the Pioneer, said Stiever just missed being on that list.

Stiever throws his 60-grade fastball in the 91-96 mph range and it shows good downhill plane with run and sink. He also has an advanced feel for a 55-grade curveball that is of the spike variety. The righty also throws an average change-up that should help keep lefties honest at the dish. Stiever has a competitive mentality and has been described as a bulldog on the mound. He should remain in the starting rotation despite his smaller build in relation to typical starters. Stiever has a high floor of being a back end starter in the big leagues with the upside to be more than that.
