Scouting report
Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus probably put it best regarding Dylan Axelrod's prospect status when he said his upside is limited, but he's there now. Axelrod was a free agent signing by the Sox in 2009 after the Padres gave up on him and he's done nothing but succeed as a starter ever since. San Diego drafted him in the 30th round in 2007 out of Cal Irvine, where he was primarily a reliever. The Padres used him as a reliever and cut him loose after a pair of ordinary stints in high-A. The Sox signed him out of the Frontier League and converted him into a starter and he has flourished. His stuff is average at best other than a good slider, but he has fantastic control. Axelrod posted a BB/9 of 1.1 in 2010 between high-A and AA and followed that up with a 2.1 BB/9 mark in 2011 between AA and AAA. Despite low walk numbers and low ERAs, Axelrod didn't get any attention until he had a strong September call-up with the Sox (2.89 ERA, 19 K, 9 BB in 18.2 IP). Oddly enough, he posted higher strikeout and much higher walk numbers in the Majors, but most expect him to be able to get MLB hitters out starting in 2012.
Major League Outlook: No. 4/5 starter
ETA: MLB ready
