Scouting report

Rarely do you see scouts put a "plus-plus" tag on any tool for any player, but Rondon has had numerous such descriptions heaped on his defensive skills. Rondon is a wizard in the middle infield, but his hitting ability remains in question. After posting less than stellar line in Kannapolis in 2014 (.233/.295/.262, 19.3% K/PA), Rondon was promoted due to Tim Anderson's injury and surprisingly got off to a better start in Winst0n-Salem. But in 2015, the 21-year old took a serious step backwards offensively, posting a dreadful .168/.235/.213 line (though his K-rate was identical to 2014). It was bad enough that he essentially lost the starting shortstop job to Eddy Alvarez during the latter half of the season. Rondon has been back in Winston-Salem again in 2016 (with another short stint in Kannapolis), and nothing much has changed - poor hitting results. In 2017 he's opened the season in AA with the Barons.

There's very little power in Rondon's game, though he does have above average speed. Interestingly, he took up switch-hitting in late 2013, but in 2015 he was back to hitting purely right-handed. Now in 2016 Spring Training, he is back to switch hitting again. His truly stellar defense means he's got Major League potential if he can hit at all, but so far, he hasn't.

Major League Outlook: Defense-first shortstop
ETA: 2019
