Scouting report

Leesman, mostly by default, has been one of the better lefties in the organization for years. He throws from a 3/4 arm angle with a fastball that peaks in the low 90s with a plus changeup. Leesman also throws a slider and a curve, both of which need improvement. Like many others, consistency and control have been his problem. In 2009, Leesman showed improvement with his control (3.3 BB/9), but in 2010 he was two different pitchers. He walked more batters than he struck out at Winston-Salem and then put up strong peripherals after a surprising promotion to Birmingham. In 2012 he posted a 2.47 ERA as a starter in AAA, but his peripherals (103 K, 52 BB in 135 IP) weren't positive. He doesn't strike out a ton of batters, but gets a good amount of ground balls from his sinker. He is a big lefty, but he doesn't have the secondary stuff of a top prospect. He was designated for assignment in April 2013 and claimed by the Rangers off waivers, but they outrighted him to the minors and the White Sox picked him up as a free agent later in the same month. Leesman didn't quite match his success in 2012 in AAA, but did earn his first big league call up. Once there, he was used mostly as a reliever and his lack of control (16 BB in 15.1 IP) cost him dearly. He remains an option as a lefty reliever, but he's not first on the depth chart.
