Scouting report
Reed started his career at San Diego State as a closer while Stephen Strasburg garnered all the attention. Reed led the nation with 20 saves as a sophomore and once Strasburg got drafted, Reed moved into the rotation with success. In 11 starts, Reed struck out 90 and walked 16 in 79.1 innings with a 2.50 ERA. He usually sat in the low 90s as a starter, but has seen his velocity jump to the mid 90s as a pro reliever. On top of that, his slider is his best pitch. It is considered a plus pitch while his changeup is an average offering. The two-pitch combo along with good command made Reed an excellent relief prospect. He was supposed to be a quick riser in the system and his dominant stints at every stop in the minors supported that. Reed began 2011 with Kannapolis and finished the year in Chicago. His fantastic season was likely the best of any minor league reliever. The gaudy numbers (111 K, 14 BB in 78.1 IP) have Reed on track to be a future closer for the White Sox.
