6/26/14 Recap: Jacob May is hot in June

Winston-Salem swept a doubleheader convincingly, scoring 17 runs over the two games. The Dash were led by their bats in game one and a dominate pitching performance in game two. Chris Beck struggled in his first AAA start, while the spot starter in Birmingham that took his place led the Barons to victory. Star of the Day: Jacob May was selected by the White Sox in the 3rd round of the 2013 draft and torn through the rookie Pioneer League and Low-A Kannapolis, hitting a combined .303/.372/.458. The White Sox aggressively pushed the switch-hitting center fielder to Winston-Salem this year and he struggled mightily, hitting just .136/.231/.210 in April. However, May has made tremendous progress and after going 5-7 combined during Thursday's doubleheader, he is hitting .357/.382/.512 in the month of June with 14 stolen bases. May uses his speed to play an excellent center field and has shown power (8 homers over 54 games in Kannapolis), so expect this five tool player to start moving up prospect rankings if he can keep producing.

Who is Hot: Rangel Ravelo collected two hits to extend his hitting streak to thirteen games. Trayce Thompson went 2-3 and hit his 7th homer of the season. Thompson is hitting .300/.391/.525 over his last ten games. Courtney Hawkins went 3-8 with a triple, a homer, and six RBI's over Winston-Salem's doubleheader. Hawkins leads the Carolina League in RBI's with 58 on the season. Keon Barnum, like Jacob May, had a awful April but has rebounded nicely. Barnum is hitting .421/.463/.658 over his last ten games. Frank Montas didn't have his best stuff on Thursday, he walked three and gave up seven hits, but he pitched a seven inning complete game and only allowed one earned run. The outing lowered Montas's ERA to 1.60, which is the best in the Carolina League among qualified pitchers. Micker Adolfo, signed out of the Dominican Republic for 1.6 million last year, had his first professional hit after starting his season 0-10. Kannapolis lefty Andre Wheeler has bounced back and forth from a starter to a reliever, whichever way he ends up, he can strike people out. Wheeler struck out five batters over his two scoreless innings Thursday, and has 62 punchouts over his 53 innings of work.

  • Is Adam Engel rehabbing or was he demoted? I remember him reaching Kanny last year I believe.

  • In reply to egib52:

Engel was rehabbing. Back in Kannapolis now.
