Pricks and Bastards

"Mom I don't really know what this word means, but I think L** is a prick".

My mouth hung open, I couldn't breathe from the laughter inside.  Why on earth was my child using this word to describe someone I had been dating on and off for two years? Well, I knew why, but I didn't know why from her point of view.

I gained my composure and asked her where she learned that word.

"The Breakfast Club" she told me.  Oh.  The movie I had just rented for her to watch. She will be 14 in a couple of weeks and I thought it was time she watched some of the classics.

I told her yes he was a prick.  And she was not to use that word on anybody else and that it was not a nice word.  And I told her again that yes he was a prick.

Now some of you might wonder why I would let my 13 11/12 year old use this word to describe someone that had been in our lives on and off for 2 years....  keep wondering.  I don't want to spill the beans and bare all of my soul here.  Let's just say, I don't usually use that word either, but asshole just didn't seem like the right word to use in this situation.

Okay, he fired me.  I tell him no more sleeping together, he tells me no more job.  So yes, he is a prick.  And he never learned how to keep business and pleasure separate!

Another word my kid seems to want to use a lot of lately, bastard.  The other day she said to me "Mom, I don't think it's that bad to be a bastard.  Jesus was a bastard".  So is L** I thought to myself.
