Late last year, I found out that my city, Birmingham was partnered with Chicago under a Sister City program. Since I was already a fan of Chicago, I decided to get involved by helping to connect the two cities further. I then got a great opportunity to start this blog for ChicagoNow. Since then, I’ve been looking at other ways, whether big or small, of how else our cities are connected. So I thought I’d share a few I’ve come across.
Mr Hudson, real name Benjamin Hudson McIldowie is a Birmingham born song writer and producer. He collaborated with Brooklyn rapper Jay Z on Young Forever from the album The Blueprint 3. What’s of note here is that he signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music label. Kanye of course, grew up in Chicago, Illinois.
Two soccer players from Illinois play for Birmingham soccer team Aston Villa FC. Brad Guzan, from Evergreen Park is the current goal keeper for Aston Villa. Eric Lichaj plays as a defender for the club and is from Downers Grove.
Birmingham and Chicago share a Sister City relationship, but did you know that their airports, Birmingham Airport and Chicago O’Hare are Sister City Airports?
Back to soccer, the other team in Birmingham, Birmingham City FC also has a Chicago native in their side. Born in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, the versatile Jonathon Spector plays as a defender and can play in a central midfield role.
Kenneth Raymond Hodge Sr, a retired hockey player from Birmingham, played for the NHL side, Chicago Black Hawks. He enjoyed three seasons there, and for the time, was one of the larger forwards playing in the position of right wing.
