Brad Guzan, Sister City Transfer. From Chicago to Birmingham

It seems to me that the Sister City love isn’t just limited to between our Councils. It stretches as far as soccer too. Brad Guzan is an Illinois native who has found his way to Birmingham. He was born in Evergreen Park, a village in Cook County.

Of Polish-American descent, an aspiring goalkeeper, he spent his early career playing as a youth for the Chicago Magic soccer club, and the varsity soccer team at Providence Catholic High School. He then moved on to NCAA where he became a second team All-American. He played in the USL Premier Development team with the Chicago Fire Reserves,an amateur league of the United Soccer Leagues before moving onto Major League Soccer (MLS). In the MLS, Chivas USA drafted Guzan in the 2005 MLS Draft. He played for the Under-18s US National Team and currently plays for the Senior National team.

It wasn’t long before Brad Guzan caught the eyes of a Premier League club. Aston Villa FC showed their interest in the Illinois goalkeeper by signing him in July 2008.
Aston Villa FC is a founding team of the first organized league in the world. They were the most successful English team of the Victorian era and they have been a mainstay in the Premier League ever since. Brad Guzan was now signed to the biggest club in Birmingham. He made his debut against Queens Park Rangers in the League Cup in September.

Making rare appearances in the Premier League, he was down the pecking order behind Brad Friedal, another US native, and Shay Given. Despite being loaned out to Hull City FC in December 2010, he found himself back with Aston Villa FC a year later only to be released from his contract in June last year. After uncertainty regarding his future, he found himself back at the club shortly after where he is a mainstay and a regular on the team sheet where he has since put in inspired performances. Well, apart from conceding eight goals against Chelsea FC this year...

Notable accomplishments of Brad Guzan include:

Being named MLS Goalkeeper of the year in November 2007.
Playing every game in Aston Villa FC’s success in the 2009 Peace Cup.
Earning a Man of the Match performance against Newcastle United in September last year.
Aston Villa’s player of the month award in October 2012
