In yet another crushing result at home against a team at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, the Fire outplayed another opponent for a majority of the match only to come away with less than three points. The 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew SC, in a must-win match drops the Fire further from the redline with only 12 matches remaining to play on the season. The contest itself played out like many other Fire matches of recent vintage complete with the requisite gut-punch late goal.
Djordje Mihailovic provided a lead in the 28th minute with a gorgeous finish from 19 yards out. Despite a hefty advantage in possession and chances, Columbus tied the match in the 47th as Brandt Bronico tucked in too far toward the middle of the pitch allowing a free cross to find Gyassi Zardes beating Bastian Schweinsteiger to the near post.
The Fire took the lead in the 63rd as Nicolas Gaitan's backheel pass was deflected toward CJ Sapong, giving the forward an opportunity to beat Columbus 'keeper Joe Bendik.
Columbus tied the match in the 90th minute as Przemyslaw Frankowski was knocked off the ball in the Crew end. The ball moved quickly back the other way as the play culminated with Jorge Corrales failing to close down Luis Diaz from serving a long pass into the box. Romario Williams worked his way behind Schweinsteiger to get on the end of the cross and head in the equalizer.
