Fire ousted from USOC

USL side Saint Louis FC defeated the Fire 2-1 in the fourth round of the US Open Cup. The Fire are the first MLS team to be eliminated by a USL team during this year's tournament.

After a flurry of early chances were denied by Saint Louis goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, Austin Martz headed in a cross from the right side of the field to give the home team a lead in the 17th minute. Four minutes later, Guy Abend headed home a free kick to double the advantage.

In the 73rd minute, Djordje Mihailovic was awarded a questionable foul in the area, which led to a Nemanja Nikolic penalty kick conversion and the Fire's only score.

To add injury to insult, Johan Kappelhof left the match in the first half with an apparent physical issue.

The Fire went into the match without Przemyslaw Frankowski, Aleksander Katai, and Francisco Calvo and they were also without Bastian Schweinsteiger but held a 67-33 possession advantage while outshooting Saint Louis 20-6. That is little consolation for another poor showing in US Open Cup play and the loss applies even more pressure on the technical staff to turn the regular season around quickly.

Fire line-up

Kronholm; Campos (Bronico 85'), Marcelo, Kappelhof (Lillard 25'), Edwards (Corrales (67'); McCarty, Mihailovic; Sapong, Gaitan, Herbers; Nikolic

Subs not used: Sanchez, Gutjahr, Martinez, Moreno

  • GR, After the fiasco in STL, I keep looking for headlines that Pauno is out. Am I dreaming or are we stuck with this brilliant, dynamic due of Pauno and Nelson until their contracts run out? Honestly, any definition of failure would apply to these guys. If the team is doing what Pauno wants, he should be fired. If the team is not implementing what he wants, he should be fired for failing to get his point across. Either way, he needs to go. I have never been this disgusted. I don't care if they move back to the city or not. I care if they put a team on the field that wins. That NR is actually debating whether the badge is the reason no one follows the team because it does not say soccer, is the saddest statement I've ever seen from a GM. The guy is a fool. Somebody please, come save the team from total disaster and buy Hauptman out so we can move on from this mess!
