USL side Saint Louis FC defeated the Fire 2-1 in the fourth round of the US Open Cup. The Fire are the first MLS team to be eliminated by a USL team during this year's tournament.
After a flurry of early chances were denied by Saint Louis goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, Austin Martz headed in a cross from the right side of the field to give the home team a lead in the 17th minute. Four minutes later, Guy Abend headed home a free kick to double the advantage.
In the 73rd minute, Djordje Mihailovic was awarded a questionable foul in the area, which led to a Nemanja Nikolic penalty kick conversion and the Fire's only score.
To add injury to insult, Johan Kappelhof left the match in the first half with an apparent physical issue.
The Fire went into the match without Przemyslaw Frankowski, Aleksander Katai, and Francisco Calvo and they were also without Bastian Schweinsteiger but held a 67-33 possession advantage while outshooting Saint Louis 20-6. That is little consolation for another poor showing in US Open Cup play and the loss applies even more pressure on the technical staff to turn the regular season around quickly.
