Fire end skid with 4-0 win over Orlando City

The Fire registered their first league win since June 30 and halted a nine-game winless streak with a thorough 4-0 victory over Orlando City. The match was also the team's first MLS contest since a 1-1 draw against Columbus on August 23.

A pair of their returning injured players figured prominently into the win. Michael de Leeuw scored a goal and added two assists and Djordje Mihailovic also had two assists.

Nemanja Nikolic opened the scoring with a tap-in of a de Leeuw pass following a Dax McCarty takeaway in the third minute. Aleksandar Katai finished into an open net when de Leeuw picked up on a bad touch from Orlando goalkeeper Joe Bendik and pushed the ball toward Mihailovic in the 28th.

De Leeuw broke through in the 56th, tapping a ball into the net at the far post after Johan Kappelhof flicked a Mihailovic corner kick in his direction.

Nikolic scored his second of the game when Raheem Edwards intercepted a pass in the 70th and sent him in on goal.

The victory moved the Fire three points ahead of Orlando City at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

  • Nice game! I hope this game does not change ownership's mind for a need to make changes in the soccer/technical side of the organization. Sometimes a game like this can be misleading as to the true stature/level of the team's quality. I'll enjoy the win though!
