Fire eliminated from USOC play

The Fire lost yet another US Open Cup semifinal in crushing fashion. The Philadelphia Union walked away with a 3-0 victory to advance to the final against the Houston Dynamo in September.

Cory Burke scored in the 60th and 78th minutes to take control of the match and CJ Sapong added an 86th minute tally to ice it. The Fire managed to muster just one shot on target with most of their first choice lineup in place and Dax McCarty returning from injury.

They now have 10 games remaining in the regular season to attempt to salvage some dignity from the 2018 season.

Fire lineup

Sanchez; Hasler (Conner 85'), Kappelhof, Vincent, Corrales (Ellis 74'); Bronico (Gordon 72'), Schweinsteiger, McCarty; Katai, Edwards, Nikolic

Subs not used: Cleveland, Campbell, Lillard, Johnson

  • I honestly cannot say I am disappointed because I think this might mean a change in management will be coming this offseason. NR, Pauno, and the rest of the crew really need to hit the road. The team was outplayed, out worked, and simply lacked cohesion. Given that the majority of the starters were well rested, that is inexcusable. Here is a qustion for Brandon Vincent: who were you marking on the first goal? Nice job. Brandon, it might be time to hang up the boots and get your MBA.

  • It could have easily been 5 or 6 last night. Simple passes going out of bounds. 10 yard passes going to the opponent. It is embarrassing. Niko is a good player, when he scores goals. When he doesn't score a goal, he doesn't offer the team anything. I hated playing with that type of player. Bastian looks old because we are asking a 33 or 34 year old player to attack and defend like he is 25. Bronico is average at best. Dax looks half the player he was last year. Defenders are hot garbage. This team is no longer playing for the manager. He needs to not be the manager for the game this weekend. He should have been let go months ago. No better time than now.
