Fire, Crew play to 1-1 draw

The Fire managed to halt their eight game losing streak in league play with a 1-1 draw against the Columbus Crew at Toyota Park. The team's more conservative approach continued with Bastian Schweinsteiger floating in and out of the backline and a high pressing style almost worked against Columbus for the second time this season.

Nemanja Nikolic converted a Milton Valenzuela turnover into a goal in the 67th minute following a fairly uneventful first half.

Another late goal denied the Fire from collecting all three points. The Crew tied the match in the 87th minute when a loose ball found its way to Niko Hansen for the equalizer.

The Fire now travel to Germany for Schweinsteiger's tribute match versus Bayern Munich. They will not play another league game until September 16.

The Thursday night game was sparsely attended and supporters groups continued to vacate the stands in protest. The announced attendance was 8,551.

  • The talent on the field was good enough to win. However, they clearly were not in sync once again. Deleeuw works his butt off. The mids never look to go forward or try to make a turn. They constantly make the safe pass back. It was not fun game to watch.

  • If it wasn't for San Jose, The Fire would be one of the top contenders for the Wooden Spoon..............again!
