Katai leads Fire past NYCFC and into sixth place

For the first time all season, the Fire have moved above the red line. Aleksandar Katai scored two goals in what could have been his last appearance with the Fire while Nemanja Nikolic added another.

New York City FC controlled possession but without David Villa, they resorted to mostly long, hopeful attempts on goal. NYCFC led 2-1 at the half on the strength of goals from Ismael Tajouri-Shradi and Jo Inge Berget. The latter also hit the crossbar in second half stoppage time.

The Fire will now need to decide on whether or not to pick up the buy option on the loan for Katai.

Fire line-up

Sanchez; Campos, Campbell, Vincent, Corrales; Bronico, McCarty, Schweinsteiger (Tchani 85'); Katai, Collier (Adams 66'), Nikolic (Gordon 72')

Subs not used: Cleveland, Dean, Ramos, Bakero

  • That was a special performance by Katai. His second goal will surely be nominated for goal of the week and, I think, will likely BE the MLS goal of the week. Let's hope the Fire management doesn't jettison Katai at this stage of the season. I understand the economics of the situation isn't great but they can't let him get away unless they are able to close 2 or 3 good transfer deals to compensate for the loss of a Katai. Even then, the upset of that much personnel change may sacrifice the rest of this season.
