Fire upset New York Red Bulls 2-1

The Fire surprised the New York Red Bulls on the road on the strength of an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Richard Sanchez and two individual moments of offensive brilliance from Aleksandar Katai.

Sanchez recorded nine saves, several of which were of the difficult variety and Katai blasted a volley from outside the box after a cleared corner kick in the 30th minute. Katai also got behind the defense in the 69th minute to draw a penalty kick chance against Luis Robles. Nemanja Nikolic converted from the spot to give the Fire a two-goal lead.

New York scored an 81st minute goal when Bradley Wright-Phillips knocked the ball in after a scramble in front of the net during another corner kick sequence.

  • Much improved in the midfield. Mo Adams and Dax were great. Adams showed he can play at the MLS level. Collier was ok. I still do not like Basti as sweeper. I actually think it leads to a lot of confusion. Katai ran out of gas early in the second half. He should have been subbed out 10 minutes earlier.

How much longer until polster and solingac return?
