Meira confirms departure from Fire

Defender Joao Meira has announced via Twitter that he is not returning to the club next season. This comes as no surprise since he was out of contract and looking for an increase in order to stay with the Fire.

The Fire have been looking for a left-footed centerback to pair with Johan Kappelhof for some time. An injury to Christian Dean and the departure of Meira puts that search back near the top of Nelson Rodriguez's wish list this winter.

Meira wrote: "I'd like to announce that I will not be a member of the Chicago Fire for the 2018 season. Thanks for these two years of my career and best of luck to all my teammates who stay at the club. To you Fire fans, I really appreciate how you have treated me since I arrived."

  • There is a lot of uncertainty at this club right now. This club was very good at points this season. They were also not very good when depending on bench players to play significant minutes. If BS and Accam are gone as well, we will need a GK, CB, CM, LW, and RW (Solignac is just not good enough) as starters! That does not even mention the bench players we need to find. This past season was the season we needed to really needed to be going all out for the title. If Accam and BS leave, we are a mid to low level MLS team with a manager who is in over his head. Signing BS to a 1 year deal should have meant going all out for last season. Seeing what they do this off season will let us know if they, AH and NR, are serious about winning. I am not optimistic...

As Dax put it... We need to upgrade our GK, Defense, Midfield, and Offense.

  • With Joao out, Can we expect more playing time for Campbell? Or is there not enough confidence in him to be a starting player in his 3rd year?

  • In reply to edubs:

I think that Joao's departure helps to prioritize upgrading the backline. I like Campbell, but I'd still want to bring in a more veteran player to pair up with Kapelhof.

  • In reply to edubs:

I like Campbell but I'm not sure they rate him highly enough to consider him a 34 game starter. He's probably a good 3rd option.
