Fire open preseason with 1-0 win over FCGU

It wasn't particularly impressive given the opponent, but the first game of preseason usually isn't much more than a fitness test. Veljko Paunovic didn't utilize a complete first choice eleven and looked at a few trialists and draft picks over the course of ninety minutes. Boyd Okwuono started the game at right back and newy arrived Miguel Alvarado, of PSL Laredo Heat, got a look in midfield in the second half.

As for the game itself, the Fire took the lead in the 41s minute when David Accam created some danger on left side feeding Luis Solignac for a shot attempt that Nemanja Nikolic tapped home from close range.

The Fire will next face the Philadelphia Union on Thursday at 1 PM.

First half line-up

Bava; Okwuono, Kappelhof, Meira, Vincent; Bronico, Juninho; Goossens, Solignac, Accam; Nikolic

Second half line-up

Lampson; Beckie, Campbell, Dekovic, Doody; Fernandez, Conner, Alvarado, Johnson; Arshakyan, Delgado

  • Did Polster play? If not, is that a sign of him being shipped?

  • In reply to Krasov:

I wouldn't read anything into that. De Leeuw didn't play either.

  • Was this game streamed anywhere? I couldn't find it. I'll never understand why a club would not broadcast their first preseason game anywhere...

  • In reply to Rubberbandman189:

FCGU attempted to stream but had technical difficulties. Some parts of the game were broadcast.

It is remarkable that all teams don't stream their preseason games.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I can understand having a desire to not stream your first Preseason game against a team like FCGU. You're going to be experimenting and the players aren't anywhere near ready. People like me are going to read into the tea leaves and start making assumptions about readiness prematurely. I probably would want to avoid that as an organization. Especially if I lost to a team like that. I'll look to the MLS v MLS preseason games as better indicators and hope that those will be streamed.

  • The Fire have 32 year old Argentine attacker Juan Pablo Caffa in camp.

    In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

One of our two DP's, the better contract seeking David Accam, is featured in none of the promo shots. This Caffa guy is listed principally as a left winger. Is there a possible move afoot, would this guy be for depth, or am I being paranoid?

At the end of the clip of Pauno, on media day, when asked about any other player moves, Pauno grinned like he had a secret. Any ideas about any moves players in the pipeline or has he drunk too much of the Kool-Aid?

  • In reply to Stephen McCormick:

Accam isn't in the promo material because he wasn't there on media day when they took the promo shots. The Fire said he was sick. He was in training the next day.

  • In reply to Stephen McCormick:

    What Danny said...

Also, Caffa is 32, a free agent, and seen as more of a depth add. I wouldn't assume that he's a replacement for Accam just because he's mostly played from the left side. I think the Fire see him as more of an underneath striker and a back-up for the de Leeuw position behind Nikolic.

  • I got to see the last 15 minutes. Daniel Johnson has some moves - he's very good at sudden changes of directions. He looked very comfortable, but that was against college opposition.

  • One positive of the FGCU game is that I liked the uniforms. Will those ever be for sale? Are they just pre-season/practice jerseys?

  • Never mind. They are for sale. Duh!

  • Polster injured his knee and is sidelined for 7 weeks. That is a huge blow.

  • In reply to Krasov:

We can't have nice things. Sigh.

  • In reply to Krasov:

Thats unfortunate timing. He needs to be fighting for his spot in the roster and this is going to make that more difficult for him. at least he is only going to miss 3 weeks of the season... but still, they sideline SJ for less then that.

  • GR, what are the chances Fire bring in another substantive signing (i.e., not a trialist/camp body) before the start of the season? Are they done shopping until the summer?

  • In reply to Shinny:

Still looking but I'd say a substantive signing is more likely in July.
