Maloney officially signs with the Fire

The Fire's transfer deal for Shaun Maloney has been completed and the Scottish attacker will begin training with the team tomorrow morning. He will be introduced at a press conference to be streamed live at chicago-fire.com at 9:15 AM. As reported here Friday the deal with Wigan was agreed to late last week but the completion of league and transfer paperwork precluded the announcement from being made until now. With the Fire beginning training tomorrow morning, the club announced the move on Sunday afternoon rather than wait until Monday morning only minutes before training.

"I'm very happy to be joining the Fire," said Maloney via a press release. "I owe a lot to the manager Frank Yallop and the owner Andrew Hauptman for getting this done. I certainly didn't expect it to get done this quickly, so I appreciate the faith that they've shown in me."

Maloney turned 32 on Saturday and missed time at Wigan last season due to hip surgery but he's been in good form with the Scottish National team and has played well recently at Wigan leading to interest from Premier League clubs and others abroad. If he can remain healthy he is still a very dangerous attacker who excels at dead ball opportunities and will assume the central playmaker role that the Fire have been missing since the departure of Sebastian Grazzini.

Yallop has insisted all winter that it was very important to have as many players on board for training from the start of camp this season and the completion of the transfer with Wigan has allowed him to have his playmaker from the get go. With David Accam participating in the Africa Cup of Nations and Sean Johnson with the USMNT, the Fire will have close to a complete roster to begin training at the Bridgeview Sports Dome tomorrow. As expected, the club also announced that Alex has re-signed.

The current roster:

Goalkeepers: Johnson, Kann, Pais*

Defenders: Palmer, Adailton, Larentowicz, Jones, Cochrane, Doody, Gehrig, Polster**, Gaul*, De Wilde*

Midfielders: Cocis, Fernandez, Nyarko, Ritter, Shipp, Stephens, Watson, Alex, Maloney, Shinsky**

Forwards: Accam, Amarikwa, do Prado, Magee, Igboananike, Bryce**

*guest player/trialist

**draft choice

  • After the past few years, I didn't think they could manage to get a lineup more or less set before preseason. Much less three DPs. We've finally got a FO that walk and chew gum at the same time.

  • Very excited about that forward group.
Pretty excited about the midfield group.
Somewhat worried about the defense group.
Happy about the keeper position with Johnson, as long as he stays healthy.

The good news is we are so stacked up top, we should hopefully have the depth to make a mid season trade for a defensive upgrade if needed. And who knows if the CBA will net an extra DP slot/opportunity and if AH would bite on that.

Good stuff, soccer is on its way soon!

  • Guys. Nuan
At least we don't have to go to a dinnrter and look at the best players being 80 pounds too heavy.. Even on paper the klopas teams had basically nothing . Yallop tried last year but got dragged thru the mud due to his proformance. It appears as this year will be different.

  • Got it - https://t.co/Mt9GHiikzP

  • Not seeing a link to a stream on the site... anyone have one?

  • Add Jon Busch to that roster list. Contract isn't finalized yet but he will be joining the team.

  • Went to an indoor soccer tournament yesterday in O Fallon Mo and guess what? The St. Louis FC had a booth and were handing out STL beanies, scarfs, and t-shirts. More visibility on a local pro club than I've seen since the Steamers faded! I asked if they had any info on who the Fire would be sending down but the reps weren't sure. Thought maybe some recent college drafts. Do you have any more info?

  • In reply to shortpasses:

Probably the draft picks but that won't be decided until later in camp.

Any idea who "Gaul" or "de Wilde" are? I assume if they were anybody to get excited about, Guillermo would have made a bigger mention of them, but I'm still curious.

  • In reply to Mark M:

Brian Gaul played for LA the last few years, He signed with STLFC last week, so I'm guessing he is here for training as part of the partnership with them.

Think Guillermo said that De Wilde was the open try out runner up. Google shows he is a left back from the Belgian 3rd division I think.

  • In reply to KChance:

    Correct.

  • Seriously, Jon Busch is agreeing to be a back up to SJ? We had some great games with Busch. It will be good to see him playing for the Fire again.
