Shipp shines in 2-0 win over DC

It's still early in preseason but Frank Yallop has to like what he got out of his squad in their first match of 2014 against MLS competition. He has to be particularly happy with the mostly young side he fielded in the second half that featured homegrown players Harrison Shipp and Victor Pineda, newly acquired Benji Joya, and trialist Grant Ward.

Shipp played a role in both goals, scoring the first off of a Joya goal post rebound and setting up Ward for the second with an impressive run down the left side of DC's defense. The combination of Shipp and Joya as central attackers with Ward starting on the right and Pineda on the left was clearly better than DC's second string midfield and back line and should ramp up competition for spots and minutes even more. Ward is a 19 year old defender/midfielder who is a product of Tottenham's U-21 program and was spotted by Yallop during his trip to the UK this winter. Interestingly enough it appears his contract runs out this June.

The first team didn't look bad either but it was the youngsters who showed brightest in this one. It will interesting to see how Shipp. Joya, Pineda, and the rest will fare against first teamers this spring.

  • i thought Kinney played really well on the right. He was composed and looked like he had a high pass completion rate. I thought Segares looked very slow and gave the ball away too much. I think the defense has a lot of options. Soumare was out of position which led to a few open looks that amounted to nothing.

  • I wasn't quite that impressed with Kinney although he pretty much stayed at home, sometimes a good thing, and wasn't out of position which happened too often last season with defenders mistakenly thinking they are forwards.
I think the big difference between Frank the 1st. and Frank the 2nd.
is that Yallop will be less tolerant of sloppy and inconsistant play.
Last season we saw too many players continually make the same mistakes game after game. Hopefully that will be a thing of the past, especially with a far deeper and talented bench.

  • G-
Any stream for tonight's game against OC?

  • In reply to Bumsteer:

J Crandall tweeted that fire's website will be streaming tonight's game

  • In reply to Drew:

They will indeed stream tonight's game. Don't expect many of the starters though. It will be mostly trialists, young players, and bubble guys today. The first team will see more time in a friendly versus DC tomorrow morning.

  • In reply to Bumsteer:

  • What happened to the stream

  • Finally got the stream, didn't work on ipad, but o.k. on laptop.
Shipp looks like the real deal.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

Agreed. I would like to see him against 1st team opponents to see if the speed of play will cramp his style. He has the knack to see the whole field. I think we have a winner with him.
